Have walked this little trail countless times, as we rent the CCC cabins here frequently. Thought this would be a nice, easy hike, even in a blizzard. I was an idiot to think that. There was 3-5” of snow covered with a layer of ice, which made for good exercise. Saw some deer - could tell that four or five deer had bedded down on the trail the night before. No other critter tracks visible - they are smart and are still in their dens.

One of my favorite central Iowa trail loops. The old CCC trail is pretty with has lots of steps & bridges, and I take the bike path past the beach on the way back is a nice easy cool down. Saw bald eagles, deer, & an owl on this mid-January hike. First time doing it in the snow, had no problem as I know the trail well. May not be a good idea for kids or first-timers this time of year - lots of steps that are difficult to see in the snow cover.

Typically free of garbage, always maintained. Be aware at dark of coyotes if you have a dog with you, seen several over the years once darkness arrives. snowmobiling is permitted on these trails.

Great place to hike! I took my 4 year old daughter and loved it. Went on New Year's Day and it was perfect. The over look is amazing, with spectacular views. Would recommend this trail.

Nice peaceful trail that travels through the woods down to a ravine and then up again to a beautiful prairie. The two hills can get your heart rate going but other than that it was an easy trail. Can imagine it gets a little slick when it's muddy, but it was manageable with snow on the ground.

Wildcat Den is my favorite hiking spot. This long loop trail takes you through beautiful woodlands, along a creek and through beautiful rock formations. I hike here year round, mid may the spring wildflowers are breathtaking and after a fresh snow it is a winter wonderland.

The Land of the Swamp White Oak Preserve is a beautiful place that has yet to be discovered by many avid hikers and wildlife watchers. The Nature Conservancy protects and manages this preserve which is filled with a huge array of plant and wildlife species. In mid May this preserve is filled with migratory warblers and while hiking along the suggested route, carpets of bluebells can be seen scattered around wetlands and throughout the forest. This trail is open year round.

About 2-3” of snow on the trail made it a little more challenging. Pretty easy to follow around the lake. Added a couple small loops in to make it a little longer. Had been a couple other times so was fairly familiar with the area.

Snowy quiet and beautiful

This trail is nicely maintained, but I wouldn’t call it a moderate level trail.

Paved trail/road path. While there is timber throughout the park, the trail isn’t shaded. Neatest part about today’s walk was that I was the first person to traverse the entire loop for a couple of days, as evidenced by the lack of human footprints in the dusting of snow covering the trail. Saw a few deer, and wildlife trails in the snow for raccoon, rabbits, and some identified creature (off-leash or wild dog? large cat?).

Trails are marked better on ashworth side then greenwood side so I ended up off trail a bit, but nice trails and easy to follow. Quiet on this cold snowy morning! Lots of deer sightings.

Pretty little hike in the snow. Saw several deer and a big owl swooped by us. Looped the pond with my 7-year-old in 2-3” of snow, she managed the trail easily. Park gate was locked, so left my car at the park entrance and walked in.

Nice 8 foot wide mowed grass paths a few small hills, a nice viewing tower that is two stories with binoculars. Only downside is that it is pretty near an interstate but if you walk far enough away the interstate noise is pretty minimal.

Attempted to find all of the trails marked in the app & failed. Some are no longer there (evidenced by portions of old concrete trail that has since washed out). Ground frozen in the early morning, suggest ankle support due to deep frozen ruts in the trail - potential ankle-breakers.

Nice hike on an unusually warm January day (50 degrees at 9am). Trail was very muddy and rutted in some places.

Early morning hike while the ground is still frozen. Unintentionally found myself going off-trail, there was small but slightly treacherous ravine that I crossed on fallen trees. Invigorating little walk.

Mostly flat and paved with two colorfully lit bridges depending on the time of day. Not sure why this one’s considered moderate, though. I’d call it easy. Usually busy.

I have walked this trail dozens of times, but this was my first time out during a mid-winter sunrise. Saw waterfowl & a big, beautiful blue jay - no deer this morning. Wide, easy gravel trail with beautiful views of the Raccoon River and lake. Ground frozen, so not muddy at all.

Spring like

This trail is a great little (paved) oasis in the middle of the city. I’m not sure why it’s rated moderate though. It’s an easy walk or bike, depending on your mileage.
