In my opinion, central Indiana's Nickle Plate Trail is a FANTASTIC paved trail. Lots of shade and few, polite trail users. Try it, I bet you'll like it.

We hiked this trail on a late Saturday morning. It had rained the previous day but surprising the trail wasn’t incredibly muddy. Very wet with runoff streams on the hills. As you drop over the hill to the lake it looked and felt as if we were in Maine. Strong wind, whitecaps on the lake. The Adena burial mound was a great, interesting historical site as well. Overall, it was a great hike. I imagine it would be beautiful in the summer.

This trail makes a loop through the Martin State Forest near Shoals, Indiana. There are several spots from which the loop can be started, but I chose to start from the Arboretum entrance. There is a small parking area just across the park road (which is also a trailhead for off-road biking trails) There are several markers along the trail which identify different tree species and other natural features. The forest was rather bare in January; however, I'm sure this has a much different, more lively feel in spring and fall. The trail can be begun at the lake as well, and I believe that is the intended trailhead. There is parking, a small playground and shelter house picnic area, as well.

Nice area to hike close to the city. One trail was slightly flooded but we still had a fun time.

Very nice trail! AllTrails is not too accurate as at one point the trail led straight and AllTrails made me go through super overgrown area. Bridges are VERY slippery! It was a really nice walk/hike.

The app doesn't follow the marked trail in places.

Nice big loop around Tucker Lake. The trail is quite wide and consists of a very fine gravel base that usually isn't noticed, as it is buried under fallen leaves. There were numerous creek crossings, and today (January 5, 2020) someone would have had no problem with locating potable water sources. A few sections of the trail were muddy from recent rains and showed signs of past horse travel, but those spots were easily skirted. If anyone has questions regarding any of the trails I've hiked, I can be reached at selectfirem4 at yahoo.com.

Nice easy walk. Could not finish the loop as part of the trail was under water and impossible to cross. Will be back to finish.

No parking at this trailhead.

I would consider this to be closer to the moderate classification. It’s a beautiful hike that winds around the lake and crosses several springs. Instead of following the old road I stayed on trail one and enjoyed the woods.

Nice little trail right here in Plainfield! No elevation really but a great trail if you want to get something quick in. A little muddy at parts (but the recent snow just melted) and gravel trail at other parts. So close to home so will be back - can’t wait to hike when it’s green!

Went backpacking from Oxley thru Elk Creek to Leota ( North to South 14 miles). Stayed overnight near Elk Creek. A difficult trail with numerous ups and downs that was made far more difficult this time of year with all the leaves hiding the roots and rocks on the trail. Plenty of spots to filter water. Not for beginner hikers/backpackers.

This is a really well-marked trail: You can't get lost. We went a few days after Christmas, so obviously not the most scenic time of year, but I can see how it would be nice during the warmer months. There are a few hills going back to the interpretive center, as someone else mentioned, but they were not bad at all. (My husband and I are both overweight and he has bad knees, if that tells you anything.) We stayed at campsite 6, which actually has two spots, one being closer to the lake, which is where we stayed for the night. Great view of the lake there. Campsites 2 and 3 also looked nice. If you go in late spring/early summer, you will find TONS of raspberries and blackberries! I imagine the field areas near the interpretive center are full of birds and butterflies with all of the milkweed and other wildflowers there was evidence of! It should be noted that you should bring plenty of water because there is no easy way to get down to the lake, especially this time of year as they lower it significantly. I also recommend treating it as an out and back as opposed to a loop. Our first day was rather boring with a big section walking next to and through farmer fields. The second day was nice walking mostly through the woods back to the IC. Tons of lake views, with an especially great one near mile marker 9. We saw a bald eagle overhead in this area as well!

Beautiful day out with lots of ducks, ducklings, and swans!

I hiked the full 9.7 loop (5 different trails that fed one into the other). Saw only 3 other bikers. It was great and somewhat of a challenging hike. Lots of leaves on the ground so little hope of seeing wildlife as they heard me coming from miles away. Very peaceful hike as I prefer to see no one when I am out. Fire Tower had an awesome view. It was 58 degrees so I had to take advantage of the weather. When trees are in full bloom there should be lots of shade available on most of the trail. The trail was in really good shape and the trails were clearly marked.
