Hands down the best trail I’ve ever done in my life!! The night before we had flash flood warnings but that didn’t scare us away! The canyon was breathtaking and getting to the bottom was a bit challenging. Water was flowing good. Rocks were slick and there was no way of staying dry! St the bottom. Be prepared to come to a few water crossings. We walked in ankle deep water some of the time so just be prepared to get wet! Then going back up was good and easy. Rocks still slick and bound to get wet. Closer to the end of the trail (on paved part) there was a down tree across the trail. Beautiful views and very challenging. I do not recommend this trail with pets or children. Especially after a good rain. But don’t let the water scare you away this was the best hike to date!!

One of the best in So IL. The trail is easy but the rocks are always slippery!

Loved this trail! Even the slippery wet rocks that made it a bit more challenging. Trail is very up and down in areas making the canyon trail more interesting.

Trails closed due to deer hunting, Dec 26-29, 2019. This additional, four-day, hunting season must have been added, maybe because the weather was so good. Park office was closed so info not available in person or by phone. We drove a long way and couldn't hike...

Great hike. Climb down into canyon and out of canyon are moderate to difficult depending on weather etc....(slick when wet) otherwise hike is fairly easy. We did it with 5 kids all under the age of 11.

Great trail. 11.2 miles. I made it in 3 hours 48 mins with only 1 short break. Easy to follow most of the time but I did get off trail once and had to use my phone.

Hiked the trail over two days this week, found it to be marked well and in excellent condition. Expert advice from Jennifer at the visitors center was very helpful in making the hike more enjoyable. Will definitely hike this again. (Garmin Fenix 6 Pro: 11.5 miles, 1750 ft ascents,, AllTrails: 13.9 miles, 1394 ft ascents) {?! take your pick}

Not. A. Loop. (But made it into one...) Beautiful scenery that pictures would never give justice. Only crossed paths with one other couple that was very friendly. Not kid or dog friendly. Good time otherwise.

I backpacked it with my boyfriend on Black Friday. The hike to the site was very nice and well marked. Camp site is cute! Portable bathroom, picnic tables, and fire pits! Very nice for a rustic backpacking site. It rained heavily that night. The next day, we had to cross quite a few deep and fast streams (or what used to be a stream). The water came up to our chest! Haha. It’s a great hike if you want a little taste of backpacking and an adventure. I enjoyed it and will do it again!

Excellent trail. Overlook to the canyon was great. I hiked the sunrise, and was not disappointed. The hike down and back to the river bed was challenging given the technicality but physically not too tough. Will try again in winter with some boot spikes.

The trail is well maintained and there is no shortage of blazes to follow. My friends and I hiked a few days after it had snowed (an inch or so) and encountered some heavily iced spots where you climb down to the canyon floor and where you climb back up. The last time I hiked here was about 11 years ago and the lookout was so overgrown there was nothing to see, thankfully that wasn’t the case this time. The lookout is beautiful and you can see for miles.

Wonderful trail, especially once you get down to the canyon. I highly recommend traveling the trail clockwise, the views of the canyon, waterfalls, etc are better seen from this direction. Trail is quite difficult at points, you will need to use your hands to crawl over some slippery rock faces and use hand-holds carved into the rock in one spot. If your balance is compromised it is a bit treacherous. Some of the stairs cut into the rock are quite tall, perhaps 30 inches or so, by going clockwise you go up these rather than down them.

We hiked this trail for the first time today with our 10 year old daughter and our dog. The trail was in good shape except for a few isolated patches at the bottom which were expectedly muddy. The hike down into the canyon includes some slippery rock sections but with a little care they are easily navigated. We followed the route in the all trails app and started out from the lower section of the parking lot. That section of trail is steeper on the way down but easier to walk in that direction than coming back up that way. The hike back up to the parking lot is less steep. All in all we really enjoyed our hike. It took under 2 hours including multiple stops for pictures. Not sure how this would be after a lot of rain but it’s been mostly dry for about a week so there was very little running water in the canyon.

My family hikes a lot... this trail is beautiful but I’m giving it a rating of two because I definitely would not call it kid friendly OR dog friendly. Trail wasn’t marked properly. Ended up hiking double the expected distance. Had to climb up an area of the bluff with dogs to get back to the trail. Ended up on a road and following the road back to our car. Let me say it one more time for parents thinking of taking young kids... this IS NOT a kid friendly trail. My dog fell ten feet into a crevice. Thank goodness she’s okay! If you are into climbing or some rigorous outdoor exploration, this is the area for you.

We enjoyed this trail. It was our first time. Some areas were hard, but my husband was there to lend a hand.

I had hiked this trail when I attended SIU-C in the early 80s and loved it. Today I hiked it again, 30 plus years later. It did not disappoint. The trail was well marked and the trail was easy to follow. Traversing the canyon sections was challenging but fun. Perfect weather didn’t hurt either!!! Will be back to hike again sooner this time!!
