Great trail, kind of confusing during Quail season! I hiked in Carlyle during Quail season, and it is very unclear where to go! I started on the Kaskaskian trail, and then ended up on the Pawnee, and then the Cherokee. Would not recommend hiking there during Quail season, because of all of the different paths cut for the hunters!! Besides that super fun and nature filled trail!!

I’d drive out of the way to hike this trail again.

Closed for deer hunting. Very disappointing as I drove from Chicago :-/

Icy but beautiful! I saw a lot of deer :)

Awesome trail for a brisk walk. Glad it was freezing; seemed like it could get a little slushy in spots. Nice view of the lake and an opportunity to loop through the veterans cemetery. Worth it!

It's all ice now so bring hiking boots with good ankle support, trekking poles and ice cleats would help as well. We made it all around the yellow trail in a little over 3 hours including stopping at the picnic area just south of the Swallow Cliffs for a quick lunch. Also, the terrain seems pretty easy when not icy - not moderate as it's rated.

I solo backpacked this and camped at the East camp. First day there was light snow/sleet/rain mix. With frost below, wet leaves, and mud, it was very slippery. I usually only carry one hiking staff but on this trip took two trekking poles; they saved me from many slides or falls. Make certain you have dry clothes to change into as soon as you get to camp. I stayed toasty warm but if I had not had dry clothes and dry puffy coat to change into it would have been tough with the high winds and snow. The East camp doesn’t offer a lot of wind shelter but selecting a site on the lee side of the trail slowed some of the wind at least at the one-person tent level. I cooked with a stove in my tent vestibule: a fire was I’ll advised with the wind and snow. Today brought sunny skies and no wind, but I found a half inch of snow on my tent. The last few miles have some fallen trees, difficult to duck under with a pack. Water crossings not challenging, but take care on the very slick slopes; use trekking poles and test each footstep before commuting your weight to it. Don’t even try the ice & snow crusted two-board bridges. It is far safer to cross the stream. Cell phone service is none or poor (very near the State line.). Trail markings, mile markers, and signs are much more visible and numerous than they were in the past,. The frequency of the blazes almost detract from a backwoods feel as does a privately-owned cabin being built near the trail. Always a scenic and enjoyable trail. GPS called my hike 10.6 miles.

Make sure you have waterproof boots today, but still a great hike.

Kinda boring, as there are no real landmarks and you can only go about 1.5 miles total due to bridge damage.

The paved trail is a loop and is easy to travel.

Great hike with lots of beautiful views. Parts of the trail are officially closed. Stairs are covered in ice and very slippery. The rest of the trail covered in ankle deep snow. Moderate to hard conditions.

This trail is a great. I own a Bernese Mtn dog and he loves the cold weather and snow. This trail has two starting points and I chose to start at the top of the stairs and go left on the Yellow Trail. We did the 5 mile loop at a Bernese pace. Lol. There are lots of ppl running the stairs and kids sledding the hill when snow present. It was nice to get away from the city for this walk.

01/26/2020 Snow riding. Most of the trails on the south side of the river were groomed and the BH trail (? on the north side) was groomed as well. It was fun but it felt like riding on a 2”X4”. As soon as your tire goes off the narrow groomed area it’s like riding in slush. Overall it was a positive experience.
