Awesome trail! A bit icy in more heavily trafficked areas, a good bit of stairs and the waterfalls still had a bit of running water. Overall a great moderate level trail!

The last bit to the trailhead was gravel and very narrow. Thankful we didn’t run into cars coming from opposite direction. We went after the rains and after a night with freezing temperatures. What could have been muddy was pretty much frozen over except in areas of sun where it was muddy. Due to rain, water was high so crossing the creek was a bit more challenging but fun. We did go off trail several times on the back half and had to constantly look at the gps to make sure we were on. The rock formations were amazing. Nature did this? The stream was peaceful and calm. Funny story, as we started walking, I heard this low growl. Being that it’s called Panther’s den, I’m thinking “panther”... I turned around and asked my son if he heard it and he said, “I’m hungry”

this trail is closed from mid december to mid march....this info needs to be updated on alltrails

Beautiful trail. We started to the left with the waterfall. Trails were easy to follow. Parking was easy and we saw a bald eagle perched on a tree! We stopped to get our permit first at the visitor center. Nice display of wildlife in there. We signed up for the bald eagle tour while we were there so hoping to learn more about these majestic birds.

Trail not marked well. Limbs and debris in trail. Saw some deer, pretty view of lake.

Ice glaze on top of thin layer of snow. Liquid water puddles underneath the ice in places

trail was muddy, but the creeks had water in them and were still able to get through. it is a longer hike. about 2 hours. the rock formation is worth it tho. 1st half of trail is well marked. 2nd half is harder to find but if you stay on the creek bed you'll do fine. would definitely do again. the waterfalls were flowing too. not sure if its like that all year...

Light snows proceeded my hike. Herron Trail portion has truck traffic as the clear out trees and only the middle of the trail was walkable. Tire tracks were ice and good only for skating. Great day to walk in one of my favorite trails.

After the heavy rains on 1/11/2020 -- suspension bridge out on portion of trail near the cemetery (east side of park). Trail is slick. Wear tall waterproof boots and walking stick if hiking today.

River Trail Nature Center’s free exhibits, walking trails and onsite nature educators help tell the story of the plants, animals and natural landscapes formed by the Des Plaines River. Floodplain forest, backwater wetlands, oak-hickory woodland, and an ancient remnant of sugar maple-basswood forest make River Trail a mix of habitats for an amazing variety of birds, insects, plants and wildlife.
