First off a few details: #1 — hiked this trail on 1/26, a warm sunny January day. #2 — there are exactly 3 directional signs along the whole loop. #3 — I only saw 4 other people the whole time. Now for the hike itself. For starters, I went clockwise and I’m glad I did. Many parts of the Creek were iced over but not al. The first crossing did have some large boulders and 4” logs. Slipped and did get my feet wet on this one but they dried quickly enough. The other crossings I was able to walk across the ice. During the hike I did get off track twice. Once early on after the trail splits I wondered too far to the east of the creek and started into a small side canyon before realizing my mistake. The second time was later before the climb begins in earnest. That time I strayed too far to the west of the creek. Both times I realized my mistake and was able to get back on track easily. But the map on the AllTrails app was super helpful! The hike up when you go clockwise was tough but not overly so. It was about a mile with between 800-900 feet of elevation gain. Trail was good and there was plentiful shade. Going down the other side seemed more rocky with less shade. Didn’t really matter in January but I could see it making a difference in the summer. All in all a great hike. Definitely not your typical front country hike. I did have cell reception at the very top of the loop but that was it. For those of you who like lots of signage, people near by, and cell reception this isn’t the trail for you. But if you are looking for a wilder, more remote, challenging hiking experience, definitely give it a try!

I absolutely loved how much this hike offered! I parked at the East trailed and included Lake Gulch on the way out and Inner Canyon on the way back in with a little detour for Cliffs/Caves trails. Most of the trail was pretty dry, Inner Canyon and the bit between Caves and the waterfall were snowy/icy but it's manageable without traction with some careful steps. I loved the variety of rock formations, river views, the dam, the ranches, everything! The stairs near the dam were very icy as were the ones on Inner Canyon. It's a state park so you need a sticker to park there but this park is totally worth it! I can't wait to come back and hike the east loop (signs say it's closed seasonally)!

arrived at 10 am on 01/27/2020 monday. we were only car in parking lot. the trail is a mix of ice and snow. spikes I would think definitely needed. 12 water crossings. most are ice. about 2.5 miles in the trail is not as packed and lots of post holing at 3.66 miles in the trail is not packed at all and we opted to stop there and turn around. the all trails map showed we should have still gone further though. this was a lovely hike and I'm sure it would be stunning in other seasons as well

Hiked this in the late summer before leaving town. The shade kept the trail cool. It is an easy hike with some really nice views. The top of the mountain has a few scattered trails so pay attention where you are going.

This is a great workout. We hiked up the incline then took the trail down which turned out longer than we expected. Take your time and turn around to look where you came from on occasion—the view is great! Parking is difficult as is clearly explained in other reviews. We will be back the next time we are in town.

Absolutely amazing hike. It was snowing while I was on the trail. The fresh powder covered any ice that was on the trail. Beautiful scenic views too.

Took my darling mother on this hike (64 yo), and she did great! It’s pretty. “Moderate” is a stretch. Maybe because it’s three miles? Has a few spots with really beautiful views.

I love this area and these trails but the amount of trash everywhere was so disappointing.

Great, well maintained trail. Several good views of the mountains and lots of places to hangout or climb through rocks. A little busy but it was a Saturday afternoon.

My boyfriend and I took the dogs out here this weekend. It was our rescue lab's first ever hike/extended walk, so we needed something not so overwhelming and difficult. We parked at the North Gate lot; early in the morning it is full but closer to noon spots start to open up. We walked 3 miles in and back. The trail is easily marked, bike friendly, runner friendly, and the kids will have no issues on this trail. You'll have some cool views of the Academy and the base if you've never been!

Still some ice. Bought some micro spikes at Costco for $13 and they worked great. Nice hike. Not too long for a starter hike
