I hiked this on 1/11 and wore my hiking boots-I was able to walk it but it was slippery because of all the packed down snow/icy patches on the trail. Microspikes would have been perfect and I would definitely recommend bringing them. “End” of trail is seemingly where the path forks but it links to another trail(s?) and you can keep on walkin’

We hiked two days ago, Monday 1/20. It was a gorgeous day! The trailhead is tricky, look for the reflectors along the road. The trail was mostly packed snow with a little ice, rocky towards the top. If you get off the trail, the snow is deep. We both wore yaktraks and found the traction to be really helpful. The trail is hard to find in places, a few less switchbacks than in summer. The views from the top are amazing! I’ve been on this numerous times and enjoy it in all seasons.

Beautiful area! Lots of rock formations to look at and wasn’t busy early in the morning.

Apex Park was NOT closed on 1/22/20 even though the trail description says it’s closed. However Apex Park does get closed a lot in the winter and spring due to mud so I’d check with Jefferson County’s Alerts and Closures webpage before you go to make sure it’s open.

I only did the Pick-n-Sledge part of the trail and turned around once I got to the Grubstake loop because it was starting to get too dark. There is one big and unavoidable mud patch at the very beginning of the trail, but other than that the mud and ice wasn’t too bad.

trail was mostly clear and dry today. a few spots were very icy.... passable on foot but could be treacherous on a bike. we started at the North trailhead, combined loops to get about nine miles and 1300 ft of elevation gain. only about half dozen other people on the trail today.

Windy today- ran against wind on north side

Snowshoed 2 miles out and back it was packed down and trial was easy to follow. Could probably be done with just micro spikes or yak tracks for almost all of the 2 miles out. The trail was empty no people just peaceful beauty

My spouse and our dogs enjoy this hike very much. it can be challenging especially gaining altitude. it takes about an hour and a half to hike it taking your time. there are some parts of the trail that lead you close to the cliff-edge, but it is safe. fabulous views of Trinidad and surrounding landscape.

01/22/20 weds. got there at 9 am on weds. no one else in lot at that point. lots of dry patches on the trail. however there is also still a lot of mud and ice and snow patches. be prepared to have your shoes or boots get muddy. and to go slow on the icy patches. very windy out today. reservoir ridge is a nice close by trail, but the views are not stunning.

Lovely little loop!

Awesome trail. Heavily trafficked. My husband and I made it without spikes or poles but they would have been helpful.
