Well marked trail with three options to reach different parts of the falls. The trailhead is only closed during turkey hunting season. The gunshots are from the range that is within hearing distance (gunshot sounds have been rare during my hikes, TBH, I’ve heard more noise from the cows, the walk is relatively quite and peaceful). I’ve hiked in warm weather, but prefer this hike in the winter. A steady incline makes for a decent workout if you want to run. Occasionally, there are cows on the trail, a bit amusing, especially if they decide to plant themselves on the path.

not too bad. easy trails. I think listed as moderate due to how Rocky it is. not for those with weak ankles. not much to see this time of year. don't go in the summer. too hot. we will try again in the spring when the wildflowers are blooming. did find a tick on one of my dogs, so keep an eye out for those.

Great trail for training. This trail may be challenging for new hikers.

Went Sunday, 1/19/20 with my wife Nellie. Very nice day. Logged exactly 12 miles on the loop we took. I would rate this hike a 6.5 out of 10. Not strenuous but the length makes it a good workout. It’s only a 1 hour and 15 minute ride out Interstate 8 and the Sunrise Highway from Carmel Valley / Del Mar. High point was the spectacular view all the way to the Sultan Sea on the East loop of the trail. The day was 55 degrees with sun and some high thin clouds... visibility was very good with only a very slight haze. Started going West at trail head on sunrise highway... elevation about 5000 ft. ... went through meadows and past Big Laguna Lake... this part of the trail is mostly flat and rolling... nice meadow and lake vistas. Trail was in 95% good shape with only small mud patches here and there that were easily traversed... some very minor patches of snow... turned East after the lake and the trail is still easy with slightly more elevation gain and going through pine tree wooded area. Crossed a side road and continued East until we crossed back over the Sunrise Highway and onto the Pacific Crest Trail. Elevation gain is greater on this side but not bad. The trail skirts left and below the top of a peak then opens up onto a fantastic panoramic 100+ mile view with a huge valley spreading out several thousand feet below the viewpoint. Palomar Observatory is a small white dot on the horizon looking North with snow capped peaks visible even further to the Northeast. The Sultan Sea and Mexico are to the South. The San Jacinto Mt. Range is due East. After spending some time drinking in the beautiful view and taking pics, we continued on the PCT North back to the trailhead with intermittent gorgeous views back to the East. After the hike we drove 20 minutes North into Julian and had a cave man sized “Flintstone” Rib ($18) at the Julian Beer Co. and a slice of apple / cherry pie with cinnamon ice cream ($5) at the Apple Alley pie emporium on Main St... FYI... there seem to be 100 pie stores in Julian!!!... afterwards, headed West on 78 back to Carmel Valley / DelMar. All in all a fabulous day!

Really cool trail. It takes you through the sandy wash up to the face of the mountain, around and back down. When you hit the trail sign for the loop, go left (clockwise) as the other reviews mention. Gorgeous views! Took us about 2 hours and 40 min!

Great time! Gorgeous views of Del Dios reservoir and Lake Hodges.

Nicely maintained mixed-use trails near Petaluma. Some good views on Panorama Trail. Not a destination park but a great jaunt is you’re in the area

Decent trail with nice ups and downs. Some great views. I would recommend in spring when flowers bloom. A little boring at times at it just goes up and down rilling hills with no water. Nice views from the top.

This trail has all the right elements for me and I really enjoyed it. The terrain alternates between uphill and flat, it was secluded with some wide open spaces, and it has the beauty and views one expects from chaparral hillsides. My new favorite hike!

This was a great hike! I would definitely recommend going toward the end of January where it’s not too cold. The weather was perfect for the hike since it was about 71 degrees and cloudy. This makes up for it not having shady spots. The hike itself felt easy to moderate but I would probably find it difficult in the summer. Parking was easy to find on a Sunday afternoon.

it's a nice trail for trail running. The start point begins at the parking lot of a public park and then leads thru some homes and then to the start of the trail. it's very nice, a lot of trees for the first few miles then the trail goes out into the open of the mountains. there was a lot of mountain bikers, you have to be careful when going thru narrow paths as the bikers could hit you. overall it's a nice trail.

Cloudy, foggy day, so the views of the Strait were not their best, but interesting anyway. Some steep spots but overall a nice couple hours hike on a Sunday afternoon.

Quick, easy trail; Lots of nice places to have a picnic at top

great views during the hike. we took our dogs, they had a great time (we found some ticks during the hike). there could be horses on parts of the trail. my dog is scared of them so it was a bit challenging. but overall nice hike

It was steep up and steep down but I liked it. I also took the more difficult route. LOLOLOL Looks Luke there is a bigger roundabout way to the top. Really neat side trails. Several benches and picnic areas. I loved the foliage.

This was a great trail with fantastic views of the bay, SF, and different reservoirs around Berkeley. The trail is very well maintained and it’s dog friendly. But there are dog poops there! Dog owners please pick up after your dog! There is gradual elevation gain which you don’t notice, but you get astounding views as you go higher! Highly recommended!

Too secluded. Creepy. Signage says be out by 5. Don’t come alone. No views.

it was a great hike with wonderful views. The trail is dog friendly with plenty of dogs coming and going. It's pretty busy during trail but you're not hiking with people constantly. I highly recommend this hike. There's some camping available not far from Echo Mountain.

Beautiful trail. Be sure to download a map to keep you on track. Lots of horses roaming around which was cool to see The life lock feature unfortunately sent an alert to our family only ten minutes into the trail saying we didn’t complete on time and were late. Great trail

Lovely shady trails - did not run into closures on Miramontes.
