Moderately trafficked, well maintained trail. We hike the South Fork in every season. This was our first time since the 2015 Lake Fire. We saw a small pack of three coyotes near the parking area. Acorn Woodpeckers and Blue Jays flew from tree to tree. Small manzanitas stretched their branches out of the snow pack giving proof of new life and growth. The Lake Fire left the once full tree cover bear, opening us up to a clear view of Mt. Baldy on the trail between the Meadow and Poop-out Hill. The view of Greyback remains awe-inspiring. The charred trees leave a beautiful reminder of the cycle of life and death of creation. A lovely trail I do recommend.

Beautiful scenery and well maintained trail.

Really nice winter trail. Great with the dog. Right now it’s not icy. Boots are fine. You don’t need spikes or snowshoes unless you want to go off trail.

It's about a mile out to the point. With new snow tonight and thru Thursday, I'd suggest snowshoes if you're staying up top. Encountered 25+ mph and bigger gusts today, but the view of Donner Lake was nice.

We were out on a short snowshoeing day. Beautiful area. Not to steep. People out in cross country skies as well. Brought the pup, couple others did the same. When the fog wasn't to thick you could see the mountain.

Fun entry-level snowshoe excursion.

Got lost in the forest, found the black road since I came over the mountain on the other side of Mormon emigrant Trail and they drove me to my car which we had to find

Use Crampons and not snowshoes for this trail in the winter. Lots of people considering the conditions. The hut is awesome ! Moderate with snow shoes. The climb is easy but with snowshoed made it worst than it was. Good for beginners

Beautiful easy trail with moderate traffic - skiers to hikers, some to castle peak and some to the hut. Microspike a must, snowshoes recommended. Husband and I did it with just the spikes while rest of our group used snowshoes. Parking - start early to avoid the crowd, parking is just right after boreal inn, don’t forget to obtain sno permit

Did this today with my daughter. Pretty views and couldn’t have asked for better weather today! I wore jeans and hiking boots! No snowshoes required even though there were folks wearing them along with full snow gear. But it was so nice today- it wasn’t really necessary. Can’t wait to do this hike again in the summer and maybe get some sunset photos! Road was icy getting to trailhead,

Great training hike for the vertically challenged (such as myself). Uphill usually kills me but this was very mild inclines, didn’t need to rest at all. Windy at summit with cool views.

Scenic trail! Snowshoes or micro spikes are a must, it gets pretty steep and icy. We made the mistake of parking at the rest area across the freeway by Boreal and crossed the freeway via the PCT tunnel. It was a surprising experience but was a long detour. Wanted to continue up the peak via the castle peak trail but we were running out of daylight. Will definitely do this again.

quiet trail and perfect for snowshoe and cross country. we hiked it and it was still very enjoyable.

In the fall or winter this walk is a treat. Still a little busy, but less so than summer. The perfect walk for our old dog.

Boots with cleats were sufficient. Took long way around and main trail back. Heavy traffic at trailhead but then thinned out. Tons of dogs. Great views. If you take the outer look it’s more of a moderate rather than Easy level.

Nice route except for a couple groups of mtn bikers coming down telegraph at 20-25+ mph. The MTN bike community I encounter at Santiago Oaks are kind and yield the trail when they're supposed to. Not so at CHSP. It's a shame.

Great family trail. That has separate bike and equestrian paths. Easy access to the lake throughout the hike. Numerous families and dogs using the trail. Even in January the trail wasn’t too muddy.
