Late review: I hiked this in September and it was absolutely amazing. Steep inclines and can be very windy at times. Beautiful views all around you though and well worth the day spent. Take plenty of water, nuun hydration fizz drink to rehydrate, Protein, calories to burn your body will need it.

This is well worth the short drive in off hwy 20. Beautiful views of the Noyo river and amazing views of an ancient redwood forest. Everywhere you look you can find the decaying stumps of former massive giants, now with cathedral tree growth with some upwards of 50 years to my estimation. I was blocked by heavy rain runoff at the beginning of the trail as there is no bridge across the North fork of the Noyo. I spent the day hiking a shorter 2 mile loop trail near the camp one and then walking up Roads 360 and 361. I brought my dog along and he was as happy as can be as we had the entire area to ourselves in mid January 2020. Can’t wait to walk the full trail.

Did this last August. Spectacular. Two passes at 11,500 feet is a real test. Beautiful scenery, few other people. Do it!

Has it’s challenges. Many blocked spot by fallen trees. Overall very nice.

Beautiful easy trail, but DEF bring snow shoes. Don’t do it in blundstones....

We got a good workout in from going up and down the mountain. Plus, the view from the top was great! Other than that, we really didn't enjoy the trail. Some parts were concrete path and the rest didn't have a lot to offer.

We really liked it! This time we only were able to go halfway. Next time we will go all the way to the top.

Light/moderately trafficked hike. Parking wasn’t a problem at all, and that’s even with me showing up later than I wanted to(10am’ish). The trail sits somewhere between moderate and hard difficulty. Lots of wildlife on this route. Birds, frogs, foxes, and a lot of coyotes(be weary of this if you choose to bring your pet). The entire trail is covered in animal feces(mostly coyote), so be prepared to nonstop see it. I actually ran into one in the act of taking a dump on the trail. Got a picture of it retreating. Suggest bringing around 3-5L of water. Trekking poles would definitely be helpful also, along with bodyglide(love that stuff). Definitely need a good pair of hiking shoes as it’s very rocky. Don’t suggest listening to music in both ears, as there are mountain bikers, and dirt bikers that use this trail as well. There are plenty of views to see on this route, one peak to conquer, and 3 different bodies of water to view. All in all it was an okay hike, but I really didn’t enjoy this trail too much. Doesn’t mean that you won’t enjoy it, I’m not even sure as to why I didn’t enjoy it, but I didn’t. Make sure to download the map to the trail, in case you lose service, due to many branching paths, and I ended up off trail several times.

Ski toured up to the saddle of castle peak. Snow conditions were great, thanks to the storm 2 days ago. Conditions called for wind slab on north type facing slopes and storm slab everywhere but southeast to southwest. We stuck mostly to south facing slopes and had great skiing conditions. Snow was a bit heavy on the south facing slopes and lighter on the north slopes. We didn’t see any evidence of avalanches and our basic tests showed good stability. We kept it to slopes less than 33 degrees. It was pretty warm today and the hike up wasn’t terrible - long sleeve shirt and all vents open.

Absolutely stunning views but was only able to make it about halfway to the junction since we were not prepared with micro spikes or trekking poles.

Great trail with beautiful views on the way down (we went clockwise). Be careful for mountain bikers as there were a lot of them. Perfect 2-3 hr hike!

Hiked on Jan 18, 2020. Conditions were absolutely perfect. Mid 30’s and 0-5 kts wind. Crampons and an ice axe or trekking poles required beyond the ski hut. The snowy climbs are straight up, the snow has covered the switchbacks and the hardened snow path just goes right up.

Great, challenging trail. Went in the snow, crampons are a must. Slid almost all of the way down the snow to the ski lodge from the peak! Very fun.
