Dog sledding expedition

I went up 20 Jan 2020 for a quick hike. MLK was free day in the park!! Beautiful trail and great views! The trail is snow packed all the way up and I made it with just standard hiking boots with no issues. I did use Yak Tracks on the way down and would suggest some sort of micro-spikes for the steep sections. My Garmin Instinct clocked an 800' elevation gain so i'm not sure if the main description is correct or my watch but the hike didn't seem too bad though it is obviously steep in spots, I do find the 1600' may be an exaggeration. All in all a great day out and helped to subdue the cabin fever!!

Wow. As of 12/19/19 there is a dry ground at the trailhead and the more you go up the more winter it gets. I turned around about 3 quarters of the way through due to timing with the sun going down. I'm 5'8 and I didnt expect there to be snow up to my waist about halfway up. Theres a point where the only pair of footprints I saw turned around just about when the snow gets crazy and I went on for probably another mile. Within that mile I saw lynx and moose tracks. A very cool experience regardleds and I'll be back in the summer to see the lake. To anyone who has the impression this is a uphill hike with a lot of views along the way like I thought, it's not. You have to climb uphill in a forest setting for more then half the hike. Still amazing

Today, my kahtoolas were a requirement. Parked below the gate (it’s closed), and walked up. Very icy. Once on the trail, varied between snowy and icy. Was good! Beautiful day, great views. Only did part of the trail.

Great trail! For someone who lives in Oklahoma it's a wonderful and unforgetable expereience.

This one is necessary if you are visiting or live on the island. Hike this at least once, I prefer Dude personally for the scenic views at the top.

The trail was FUN! Well established , maintained trails. Took bear spray just in case. Views from Dew mound were gorgeous! Yurts are available to reserve. Don’t forget the parking fee- Pay the ERNC. I’ll do this one again!

This hike is awesome, it’s a beautiful payoff. Short, tough, but sweet.

Did this hike atleast 4 times this past spring and summer. It’s is beautiful! Just short enough for a quick hike, but leads to amazing views. Most times it is rainy at the top but you can usually still see (just check the weather). As I would say this is very moderate- it took my husband and I about an hour and 45 minutes to do. However, if you are not in hiking shape and able to handle inclines quickly- expect around 3 hours or more. I have brought guests who are not used to Alaska Hiking and it took almost 4 in some instances!

At first I was a little nervous to try to conquer this trail with it covered in snow, but it’s a very well marked trail and was very easy to follow, even in the snow. The views are some of the best I’ve seen here in Alaska. I could even see Denali way off in the distance! I used snowshoes most of the way up, switched to microspikes near the top as the path gets more narrow and requires more precision, and then came down in microspikes as well. It took just over 3 hours with stopping along the way and taking about a 20 minute break up at the top. Overall, it was one of the best hikes I’ve done!

The first bit of the trail up to where Falls Creek mine road splits off is well maintained. After that, it is more primitive and a bit rough in spots. Lots of roots to go over, I wouldn’t recommend a mountain bike. The last half of the trail when you get out of the spruce is very overgrown. Even with most of the plants dead for the winter, the trail disappears in a couple spot. I never worried about losing the trail, but seriously USFS, if by chance you read these, would it kill your budget to send a couple workers out there with a line trimmer a few times a year? Decent views in a few places farther up but mostly in the woods. The lake is worth the bushwhacking. I’ll most definitely be making the trip next year to camp up there for a few nights.

This was a great hike. After the initial uphill it opens up and leaves you in a broad valley surrounded by majestic mountains. I went after it had been sunny for a few days and it was mostly dried up. There was about a quarter mile of ice that was annoying to get around (but not that hard) and hard packed snow for the last mile or so. Some creek crossings, so waterproof shoes would be recommended, I did it without micro spikes or trekking poles, but I did do some sliding. Just the right amount of people, but I’m sure it gets crazy in the summer.

I miss this hike. I would do it again.

Beautiful trail. Very easy to walk and little snow. Only had one issue and have learned many people have the same struggle, my dog ripped his paws up good on the trail. So if you’re bringing a pup, booties for sure!

Even though the trail was mostly flooded (stream flowing down the trail), at times icy (had to cut through bushes off trail) and snowy for the last quarter, it was very enjoyable. Didn’t have spikes or poles, it was very feasible.

We had to turn back due to the extreme winds. It’s always a windy hike, especially at the lake, but there were actually high wind warnings for 60-80 MPH winds this weekend on hillside and they were not lying.

Great trails Beautiful scenery and great views

As the snow and winter weather continues be aware the trail intersects avalanche terrain. This is a great, meandering trail with a lovely lake at the end. Bring extra layers as the weather can quickly change and the climate at the lake is typically cooler and windier than the first 3 miles of the trail.
