The spur takes you to a nice overlook of a tree-filled valley, awesome colors in the fall.

Great for beginners or those who are in the process of building strength. Also nice if you want a hike that doesn’t take up the whole day. Be sure to wear pants to protect your legs as you walk through long stretches of ferns that grow over the train. Pretty view at the lookout.

Quite overgrown. Still some downed trees, as others have mentioned. I opted to take the right trail as an out and back, rather than take the loop (the left trail seemed even more overgrown). I was the only person on the trail when I was there this afternoon. Mostly downhill on the way out, which means uphill on the way back, but the grade is gentle. Definitely not difficult. It's a gravel road to the trailhead, but there will be a pullout spot on the right (when coming from Mountain Lake) to park. There is a sign with more information at the trailhead. View from the overlook is nice.

Very nice beginner trail if taking the right route opposed to the left. The left is a little more challenging and wouldn’t recommend taking small children or elderly. Lots of downed trees made path a little hard for a double jogging stroller. The left path is also NOT recommended for strollers of any kind. Definitely a beautiful view at the overlook. Will be doing this one again when tress are in bloom. Only 4 stars because of all the downed trees. Strongly suggest child carriers instead of stroller. Haha. Right path tends to be muddy in spots.

Simple hike with a calming stream and some steep incline switch backs and finished by a nice outlook view. Certainly more exciting hikes in the area but this is a nice change of pace in a beautiful area. Lightly trafficked.

decent hike. It's definitely lightly trafficked since we were the only ones on the trail. It was much easier than most hikes I've been on and I did it only stopping twice recovering from an injury and wearing a knee brace. definitely kid friendly. You do pass a lot of private property on the way there but don't worry its back there.

Great hiking for two of us with bad knees. We were able to easily make the whole hike. The spring is about 2 weeks behind the rest of the new river valley and the birds seri ayes us until the heavens opened and the rain came down. I would like to go back to explore the stream more. So serene.

Getting to this trailhead is difficult if you are using the other "War Spur Trail" description on AllTrails. This page has the correct coordinates and the Forest Service link below has the correct driving directions. A nice trail loop! Nice vista of a valley, and gorgeous fern forest. Feels very ancient. From the Forest Service website: War Spur Loop is an easy trail through the Mountain Lake Wilderness that treats hikers to a wide variety of plant life and an outstanding view. Most hikers travel the loop counter-clockwise, following the Salt Pond Mountain ridge to the overlook. In spring, you’ll see an array of wildflowers, rhododendron blooms, and flame azaleas. In fall, you’ll be surrounded by the colorful foliage and giant ferns. The overlook offers views of the Mountain Lake Wilderness, Johns Creek Mountain, and the valley below. On the return hike to the trailhead, you will walk through a rhododendron thicket and pass a number of large spruce, oak, and hemlock. Shortly before arriving at the trailhead, the War Branch Connector Trail heads north linking War Spur Loop to the Appalachian Trail and then on to Wind Rock overlook.

Nice little trail, easy for the family, but I would recommend early spring, late fall/winter. We ran into a good-sized aggressive rattler at the overlook, which I understand is fairly common. It is not a well-worn trail so that's going to happen in the summer.

Great little loop trail. Takes you through a hemlock stand and rhododendron grove. I've led groups of all ages and there are plenty of things to see no matter what the age. Water features along the path and wildlife to be seen. I enjoy the overlook and from there you can see more Eastern Hemlock damage. There are also geocaches along the path. The Forest Service maintains the trail nicely and it's a great afternoon stroll through the woods!

This is a great trail for hiking or trail running as long as you are cautious when navigating the trail. The overlook is about 1.3 miles out, and it provides a nice view.

Nice little loop up at Mountain Lake. Not a ton of elevation gain, takes you out to a nice overlook. Trail is pretty easy to follow and well maintained.
