Directions from Troutville, VA: From the intersection of VA 606 and 640, east of Troutville and Nace, go east on 640 about 1 mile. Watch for sign. Trail ascends and intersects Blue Ridge Parkway about 600 feet south of Montvale Overlook.

I can't find where the trail comes out after you cross the fire road... there's a well-used trail but then it just suddenly ends. According to this app, the trail comes out on Spec Mine Rd, but I haven't been able to figure it out.

I have hiked the steeper end of the trail straight to the old mines I was a part of a unit that was the first to reach it in camp Bethels history it is a very steep climb at first on the trail I was on and it was amazing at the top because the mines gave off really cool air though for our safety we did not go into the mines ourselves. Far to dangerous

First so no one else wanders around aimlessly looking for the trailhead, it begins across the Parkway and just a little bit north. Good trail, although a little rocky

starts off pretty easy and can get steep in some parts. not a whole lot for views, but it is secluded and we ran into some bears. towards the end, there is some forestry going on and multiple trails and it starts to get confusing. you will not find the mine on this trail.

Loved it. Not too steep, perfect with pup and baby in a carrier. largely shaded, cool in the morning.

This particular trail won't lead you to the mines as I'm sure the forest service doesn't really want you playing around in them, however I live near this area and have made the trek to the mines themselves. As long as you are careful it is a fun journey with lots of stuff to explore once you get there.

Not a bad hike at the beginning. I started on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Hike down isn't to bad as it is mostly down hill but once you decide to turn around is where the burn begins. I was actually headed out to see if I could find the mine itself which I didn't. All in all a great strenuous hike, no one there but the dogs and me.
