We attempted to go on this trail but ended up on the falls trail which is much steeper. Leaving the parking area you will walk a short distance to a concrete marker. The Saddleback trail is to the right. The straight ahead is what I recommend for the descent to the falls. It is a 1200 ft descent where this trail has minimal elevation change. Just wanted you to be aware. Some of the reviews are for the South River Falls trail. They share a trail head but are very different hikes.

There are still a few trees blocking the last part of the loop, but they are easy to go around. The views are quite drab, but we did see a ton of White Trillium blooming. I also spotted a gorgeous Luna moth.

No views worth writing home about but fun trail! Had to go off trail around fallen trees 4-5 times but not hard to get around. Recording said 4.1 miles. Bathrooms at the trailhead. Definitely have the basic map downloaded because it would be hard to know which way to go without it.

Awesome hike, but blowdowns on last section make for some interesting go arounds.

Decent hike - scenery a bit lacking.

Really gorgeous during the summer, though a bit tough to find initially. We started at the South River Falls Trailhead, took a right on the AT and then a left onto the forest service road. From there, it's fairly easy to follow. Not too many steep areas or difficult terrain, though parts of the trail are fairly overgrown. We did see a fair amount of bear droppings, and from what we saw/read, the trail is good for seeing wildlife. Overall, it's an easy hike, and a good way to spend the afternoon.

We followed the hike described here and had a wonderful time. The trip down to the falls was easy and relaxing. I'd definitely recommend continuing past the overlook and going to the base of the falls, as the view at the summit does not do the South River Falls justice. At the bottom, the shallow pool is a great place to dip your feet. We also had a blast observing crayfish, baby salamanders, and other aquatic life beneath the falls. The hike back up again is all uphill and a bit more difficult, but well worth it. One thing to note: you likely won't be alone on this trail in the warmer months (we saw about a dozen other hikers that day). Overall though, it's an great day hike.
