This is a historic interpretive trail with both Revolutionary and Civil War points of interest. The park service provides guide books at the trail head that lead you along the trail and gives a brief explanation of each site. There have been sightings of several bald eagles from the river overlook at the top of the hill. The hike features a small civil war fort and era homes with lineage to the famous Robert E Lee! This fort participated in the civil war, getting shots off at a passing gun boat. The hike starts at the amphitheater, where an old hunt club had a two story building (ruins) and various learning events are currently held. Continuing on to the fort, you will find cannon emplacements on the river with some great water views. Multiple benches at this location gives you places to eat a packed lunch. The next leg takes you to the Henry Lee family cemetery, where the headstones have been removed for perseverance. Not far from that location there is a great view of the canyon which the railroad line passed through. Continuing to the Henry Lee home site, you will have a well spot and an overview of the home site. The last stop shows you the Fairfax home site and well. The well is brick lined and prominent. The home site still has a standing chimney and showing multiple foundations.

Being newer to the hiking thing, I'm not sure what to expect of trails. That being said, I'd do this trail again. It meshes history with nature education and the outdoors--works for me! And my dog liked it too!

Went with the Ranger, learned about the Pawpaw fruit and tree. Nice walk, some steeper areas but easy to walk.

Great trail to take a dog. offers a slight challenge with some hills but still pretty easy. It would be a great run spot but definitely get there early. It is near some great swim beaches and on nice days it gets packed. The pup and I probably easily added a mile to our hike due to parking. Of course that isn't a problem since we came for the hike. Also be aware there is a $10 park entry fee but if you love the parks, it is money well spent to preserve these natural areas and enjoy their beauty and all they have to offer.

It’s a simple, easy trail if you’re looking to just get out for a bit in the woods.

I am now in love with this whole park the trail itself was marked as “easy” and this over weight old lady would call it moderate not easy. There are several hills u have to go up, they aren’t that long but whew about killed me. Lovely woods a lot of history in that park not much led to see now but it was a nice surprise seeing what was there.

Great trail for families with older children- some steep hills, but nice views and some interesting sites along the trail. The whole park is quite nice.

Nice walk in the woods. Seems like a lot of vertical for the location.

Great trail for a jog/hike with my dog! The first part is pretty easy for a jog, but it started to get a little muddy (it was raining) so we just hiked. My dog loved it and the stops were really cool!

An easy mix of narrow and wide trail with pleasant rolling and steep points. We took the dogs and had a great time.

Lees Woods Trail is a nice hike in the Leesylvania VA State Park. There are many historic marker for Gen. R.E. Lee's Boyhood home. The path has a few steep grades but over very nice.

Not being from the area, the trail head was a bit challenging to find as we arrived from across the Potomac via zodiac tender. Luckily a park ranger directed us to the location at the North end of the upper parking lot. This is a great trail hike, full of history with good interpretive information along the way. We highly recommend this easy hike. Learn about Robert E. Lee's father's homestead. Good views of the Potomac.

This was an enjoyable hike that included some terrific Civil War ruins (cannon battery and home sites) to add an educational element. In addition, I saw an osprey, deer and foxes while on the hike. I will be back to Leesylvania State Park to hike more trails in the future.
