Flat Top Mountain is one of three mountains making up the Peaks of Otter in Jefferson National Forest. It is the tallest of the three, topping out at 4,001 feet.

A beautiful trail. The overlooks along the way are especially pretty in the winter with the trees bare. The leaves aren't too bad. The view at the top is one of the best I've seen in the area. An excellent location for a proposal .

Had a great hike with temperature in the 60’s. We hiked from the Parkway parking up to the summit. Round trip was 5.6 miles and it took us approx 2 hrs 50 minutes which included a few stops on the way. The trail was rocky in areas with a pretty steep incline near the top but the view was well worth it.

lots of loose gravel so take it slow. nice view at the top. sign says 4001 feet.

The entire trail is gravel on dirt. Extremely slippery. Took longer to come down than to climb. No rocky climbing, just steady incline with a couple flat areas. Seemed long and boring.

Enjoyed the trail. An absolute challenge with the continuous steep inclines. The actual trail starts at a natural spring.

Short hike with good views. Steep enough to make you sweat. Worth doing but sharp top has a better summit. Nice flowers and butterflies and we saw a bear.

One of the most beautiful views in Virginia! Right before the actual summit, there is a pile of boulders to your left. Carefully climbing to the top provides a view of the surrounding mountains and farm land. It’s also a very lightly trafficked trail. We only spotted one group at the summit and one lone hiker on the way down - otherwise, we were alone! Trail has very few switchbacks and basically goes straight up the mountain, after picking up the actual trail past the lake. Challenging but not overly difficult and fairly short - with beautiful views! This is one of the few hikes I’d do again!

Intense! Super steep and strenuous but VERY lightly trafficked (at least on the weekday I went), tough on the way up, nice views at the top but you kinda have to find a rocky overlook yourself. Saw a lot of wildlife, very clearly marked trail (can get to it behind the lodge at blueridge parkway- passed the picnic area, and passed the Polly woods ordinary trail, it starts on the left wooded area- with a sign that says flat top summit) what a workout!

Steady incline, make sure to scramble rock outcropping for best view. Totally worth the hike!

Very fun hike with incredibly rewarding views! The sheer amount of trees block the view the entire time until you get to the very top, and then the view hits you and it's an amazing feeling. Got to watch the sunset from the top and hike down in the dark! Really amazing! The best views are not from the very top; instead climb up some rocks on the left side of the trail right before the summit sign.

Nice hike, good workout, and less crowded than neighboring Sharp Top. Some notes: -There are two trails to Flat Top's summit. The one linked here begins at the Peaks of Otter Lodge. This isn't where the actually trail begins, so you can either drive to the "overflow" parking past the first Lodge parking, walk past the Polly Woods Ordinary site on the paved path/road, OR 2) come in from VA-43 and park closer to the actual trailhead. The other trail, listed in Bedford, is a little further south on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The road is currently closed (at least coming from Peaks of Otter Lodge). -The bathrooms in the Peaks of Otter vicinity were closed on Jan 1. -There is a false summit when you're approaching the ridge, but you're not too far once you see that! -There is an actual summit sign, so continue until you see that. The best view is on the first rock outcropping to the left. The views from the true summit are a little underwhelming. Stats: 4.53 miles 1772 ft elevation gain 2:06 hours

The hike isn't too bad and the view is absolutely beautiful. The only downside is the sheer length of the trail that is made up of fist to head sized uneven rocks. they don't make much of a challenge on the way up, but are murder on the ankles on the way down. Hiking boots are heavily recommended.

The view was okay. The trail wasn’t well marked and was also overgrown. There was also a bunch of switch-backs. I’d say it was moderate because of how long it was to walk it. I have an injured knee and it wasn’t to hard on it. Just long. At least 3 plus hours.

It was great but I really don’t believe it is good for dogs. Rocky just about the whole way. Definitely hard on the paws

Beautiful hike with some great views. My husband and I had a picnic on the rocks at the top.

This is my first "Hard" rated hike and this trail does not disappoint. We went before the tree canopy was in and the views all the way up were great. If you are in superb shape you might rate this as moderate. But, my 59 year old bones agree with the rating.

We hiked from parking lot off the Parkway to picnic area and back. It took a little over 5 hours. Good workout!

Great hike, not too busy, when you get to the top there's a fork with no sign, if you go to the right there's one small outcrop of rocks with a beautiful view & if you keep going on that trail back down you end up at the Peaks of Otter Lodge. If you go to the left at that fork you come to at the top there's a nice flat rock outcrop with a beautiful view that's better for relaxing/snacking! Rocks are slippery when wet!

Great hike, beautiful views and well maintained. Just be careful going down - the trail is mostly loose gravel so it's kinda like hiking on ball bearings

This trail is really not that difficult. Neighboring Sharp Top trail is more strenuous.

I've done this hike about four times now and the view is always incredible. The hike can get pretty tiresome since most of it is uphill, but the view is worth it. I'd say it takes about 2-4 hours. When you get to the top you do have to climb some rocks for a good view.

Good view at the top. The trail was a little over grown.

Great hike. Not as many people on trail. Limited view at the summit. But there are a couple of rocks at the summit to climb on for a view.

Still one of my favorite hikes! Great views with moderate traffic.

If you do the get directions option, it takes you to Peaks of Otter lodge, which is not the exact start of the trail, but it's close. I uploaded a picture to help. The trail is easy to follow and not marked until you reach the summit. We went in mid February so there were no leaves, but the views were good, and the trail was not hard. No crazy incline, about 1.8-2.0 miles to the summit. There were some good places to have fun and climb rocks.
