Hiked 1.12.20. It was a beautiful 65 degrees today so I decided to hike this trail. Unfortunately, I was hugely disappointed. As soon as I parked at the small pull off on 42, I was greeted by the sound of gun shots from the nearby shooting range. Not exactly the peace and quiet I was looking for. However, I trekked on, excited to see the views from the fire tower at the top. About a mile into the hike, the trail runs along a “creek,” which appeared more like a river today, I’m guessing due to melting snow and recent rain. This was all fine until about 1.5 to 2 miles into the hike, when you had to cross said “creek.” There was easily 3 feet deep of fast moving water to cross to get to the other side. I walked up and down along the creek to see if there was an easier place to cross, but no avail. Dishearten, I ended up turning around and headed back to my car. Would not recommend after recent rain.

good hike with a few good views, wind at the top is terrible and definitely was a hard climb at the end, other than that the falls and the trail portion were beautiful and well maintained. took me about 5 hours for the full loop

The firetower lookout on top made for a great view. We overnighted on top and came down the next morning. Definitely steep and makes for a good sweat if carrying overnight gear. The view from the tower at night is spectacular

View from about 100 feet before the top of the knob is the best view. Easy to moderate hike for the first three miles, but very strenuous incline to the summit. Well maintained and easy to follow.

Payoff at the top was worth the hike. The fire lookout is awesome. However, the trail itself was only mediocre. As others have pointed out, the last mile or so is on a dirt/gravel road.

very scenic on the first lag of this hike...bring plenty of fluids and proteins for the last stretch..that incline access road is no joke...did this in july..wont try again till fall..ill stay the night for the next trip..for that sunrise views..the tower at the end was my motivation

I have done this several times, the gravel road is tough, hands down. I packed a small donut/ floaty from Walmart and my swimming trunks in the summer, the pond in the summer made it well worth it, and the views.

The 'trail' portion of this hike is really nice; steady elevation gain, follows a pretty creek for a bit, and is very peaceful. After about a mile and a half, you get to the fire/access road that leads to the summit. This gravel path is VERY steep (about 18-20 degree incline) for quite a long distance. This portion is very tough even if you are in good shape. The summit area is very nice though, and offers almost 360 degree views of the GW National Forest, especially if you climb the somewhat sketchy looking watchtower. If it wasn't for the views, this would be a 3 star hike at most.

This trail get three stars only because of the awful climb at the end on the gravel road. That thing is a beast! But the views at the top are completely worth it. There are also great camping spots that I hope to take advantage of another time.
