Directions from Front Royal, VA: Skyline Drive travels the entire length of Shenandoah National Park. Mile markers are placed along the right-hand side of the road heading south. They are numbered from north to south beginning at the northern terminus in Front Royal, Virginia. Facilities, trails and park features use the mile markers as points of reference. Park in Gravel Springs Gap parking area which is a short distance beyond milepost 17. Descend on the Appalachian Trail a very short distance to a trail post sign for Bluff Trail. Turn left of Bluff Trail and travel about 1 mile north to Big Devils Stairs Trail which veers off to the right

Bit of a shame this portion isn't closer without having to hike down Bluff Trail, but is definitely worth the side hike down the hill. Given the name, I was expecting some long steep rock staircase, but was pleased to find that was not the case and was easy trail down to where the views begin (was closer to end of long loop already). Didn't go all the way down since others mentioned there isn't much to see past the views, but definitely like the view and the way the trail went along the edge. Also made for nice change of scenery when continuing on the loop of Bluff Trail and Mt Marshall Road.

Sept 2019- Decent but probably wouldn’t do it again. Towards end of trail is starting to become overgrown a little bit but not bad. Several down trees in the trail. Dead ends at a private property line so a bit anti-climactic. There was one short stretch that has some nice views off the rocks. The way back was a decent workout. Did see a small black bear.

I would recommend this trail if venturing from another trail as a side trip. A great surprise to get the overlooks! Saw ticks on the rocks but I wasn’t bit and had decent bug spray and came across a rattlesnake under one of the boulders. It seemed tired and cold so never rattled. Short steep section and some slippery rocks but not for long. Good primitive camp site near Marshall Loop junction.

A lot of ticks and poison ivy on this trail. Be careful. Easy hike to overlook but if you continue on to the bottom and coming back is where the moderate begins. A lot of elevation gain. Good workout on your legs and lungs. Happy Hiking

Great day hike or one nighter. Great rock outcroppings, you can do easy repelling off some of the cliffs, a couple other gem overnight campsites.

Obviously the park is beautiful with amazing views but this hike was just meh. It was very rocky and about a half a mile of the trail is walking the edge of cliffs and isn't well marked. We wouldn't do it again or suggest it.

Quiet, peaceful forest views. On a nice day in September I had the trail to myself, no chatter and no crowds. Good view of the valley. Many spiderwebs when you are on a less-traveled path. The dog handled it fine and enjoyed the trickles of water to drink along the way.

Hiked from Keyser Fireroad to BDS. First part along the AT was beautiful. 50/60 degree weather. Snow was still on the ground....felt like a foot in a few spots. Once the trail crossed Skyline things got a bit slushier then less snow. The trail from Gravel Spring was muddy/snowy. Lunch at BDS was warm and sunny. Great day for a hike. Felt like Sochi.

I just hiked that trail yesterday, the end of the summer. Nothing special about it except it's a good exercise on coming the back country. The tresses are big and leafy so i couldn't even see any views, may be it wouldbe a better hike in the fall.

I hiked this as a circuit 12 mile hike about a year ago with my dad. Let's say day 1 was easy downhill and enjoyable. But boy lete tell you day 2 was hell. Reached the valley of bi devils stairs whih has a ton of rock to walk over. Everything was great until we reached "the stairs" where we realized there was about a 1500 foot elevation change and mate even more than that. Nevertheless it was grueling to say the least but very worth the exercise and even more worth the views. Alternatively you could hike down the stairs to start unlike we did.... Truly an awesome hike but quite strenuous especially with camp gear

Added pictures to show the view. I followed the trail on hikingupward and on the Shenandoah National Forest maps......unknown what trail the previous reviewer went on.
