The historic Flume Trail takes you back in time to the mining boom of the 1880s. The Rockerville Flume carried water 20 miles, from Spring Creek west of present day Sheridan Lake, east to the placer diggings near Rockerville. The flume operated until 1885, and enabled miners to take over $20 million in gold. The trail follows the actual flume bed for much of its length. Along the way you'll see historic artifacts and parts of the flume itself.

If you are not confident in your navigational skills I would highly recommend using a gps. Other than the difficultly of navigating this is a great trail. It has a wide range of scenery for distance. The difficultly of the trail is moderate through out nothing too difficult besides the distance. All in all good hike. Would hike again.

So, we only covered about 5 miles of a small area because we took a wrong turn... it was a nice 5 mile hike anyway. Will def give it another shot and try to make it further.

Muddy in three places but very good otherwise. Most of the downed trees are taken care of.

The spring snows really hurt the trail. There were a lot of fallen trees blocking the trail as well as my and snow all over. I'll try it again later in the year once it dries up and some maintenance is done on the trail.

Great hike with some gorgeous views. Took about 5 hours to complete, which included a detour up and down Boulder Peak and cutting a good chunk of the Flume Trail hike trail via Boulder Peak Road because we were worried about losing sunlight due to a late start. Very good trail conditions as of today, with very little snow (only a couple small patches that weren’t deep). I’d highly recommend downloading the All Trail maps or have a phone/GPS with topographic maps and the trail route saved. Some of the trail markers are pretty difficult to spot and the trails aren’t very intuitive in some spots. Checking my saved hike route via my phone GPS definitely helped our hike and confidence in staying on trail.

Great trail, well marked trailhead with plenty of parking. Nice moderate trail, beautiful views of the lake. Made it to the tunnel, it was a little creepy but not too bad. We are from California and did this hike during our vacation in Rapid City. Would go back again if we ever get the chance!

This trail has amazing scenery, from around the lake, up on the ridge, and down in the valley. Only problem was we kept finding ourselves losing the trail due to all the switchbacks and poorly marked trails. It ended up being a 16 mile hike in approx 7-8 hours. We started out in coon hollow going towards the flume trail head.

Would be better if marked better

Loved the trail; however we were unprepared to cross 4 bridges over rushing water. Good thing we could sit and scoot across! Also easy to get lost due to no signage to guide you. Hard to know which way to go!

Great trail! Amazing views. I have hiked several trails and this one ranks up there as a must see. 6yr old and Cockapoo dog had no problems.
