really cool traill. A couple of things to consider. 1. it's not moderate it's hard 2. it's not 4.9 miles it's over 6.5 miles 3. trekking poles and hiking boots are a must 4. take your time the views are great. 5. use common sense when navigating...its not hard to stay on trail 6. as of December 2019 there is a huge tree downed over the trail making a bypass very slow and dangerous take your time and you'll be fine

Great trail completed last winter on Christmas Eve. Cool rock formations, the start was steep along the bank. Overall was a great hike!

I highly recommend hiking poles (so slippy), hiking boots and a really good sense of direction. This trail was just alright. Not much in the way of wildlife/fungi/etc. Once and done for me.

We did just Clark run not the full rager loop. The beginning is really inclined and steep, but, the trail mellows out and gives a really nice hike through boulder paths. Lots of neat features. We did both have running shoes (both our hiking boots were out of commission) and I highly suggest having hiking boots.

Awesome trail! takes about 3hrs to do the whole "Rager Mtn." hike. There is, however a shorter version called "Clarks Run". It can be a bit confusing at some points of the trail and it ends with some very loose rocks but is great if you're up for the challenge!

Great hike. I went out today with my 6 and 9 year old. we did not do the whole loop. we took the shortcut. the "shortcut" was marked as Clark run while the whole big loop, which is shown on the map is labeled as something else. I forget what, we came out several hours ago. This was not an easy hike but my kids are troopers. I disagree about the complaints of all of the blazes around mile 3 with the idea that someone was trying to confuse hikers. this area is all boulders, the trail is not clearly defined as it nothing but enormous rocks I think the "confusion" is just different ways to maneuver the boulders. The blazes were great in my opinion. my children actually followed them with zero confusion. Would like to do the extended loop in the near future. was great!

pretty tough hike. I would rate as hard due to first half being pretty rough incline and then coming back around is a hard downhill with lots of rocks. good 3hr workout with the dog.

Great trail, but definitely all terrain. First mile and last mile of this trail are STEEP. Once you get past the initial steepness the hike gets significantly easier. As others have said, it seems that at one point someone splashed yellow paint on trees everywhere as a joke to confuse hikers, however in warm months it is easy to see the trail. I believe in winter months you should still be able to discern which yellow marks are the real ones (they are bolder and more vibrant). Great views at two different points on the hike. A few blown down trees from the huge storm we had two weeks ago. The last mile is steep and passes through a boulder field, definitely can be difficult but is fine if you take your time. Hiked with a small dog (Shiba Inu) with no issues. Definitely recommend if you're looking for a decent challenge and a good workout!

all terrain trail with emphasis on ALL (steep climb, mud, rocks, boulders, stone path, no path, open field, fallen trees, stream). never did find a waterfall though trail was so poorly marked in some areas that it's amazing we got back to the trailhead at all. other areas were over-marked to the point of being nonsensical yellow blazes on EVERY tree for a good quarter mile - really?!). came across a porcupine that appeared to have been shot in the head and a tree stand at the highest elevation. nevertheless, it was a fun adventure and still beats the treadmill! thanks to All Trails for keeping us on the path. Not likely to return. Warning: some parts of this hike are rugged.

Great hike to get the blood pumping. The sections in and out of the gorge are steep and tedious. Awesome rock outcroppings and views of Clark Run. We did the whole loop in about 2.5 hours without really pushing the pace. There’s a great view of the Conemaugh River from the rocks on the left side when looking up the valley. Definitely be aware of your hand and foot holds if hiking this trail in the summer, It’s easy to see how it’s home to both of PA’s venomous snake species. Also around mile marker three someone took yellow paint and marked a ton of trees in an effort to confuse hikers where. Just be aware but it’s not to hard to tell which yellow markings are the trail. 100% worth it

We really got an awesome workout! Our phones and my Fitbit all showed that we went over 7 miles. We enjoyed the trail and had a great time though even though it was longer than expected!

That was a great workout! We had over 7 miles on our phones and my Fitbit and we seemed to be on the trail for the most part. We really enjoyed the trail but was longer than expected!

We liked the trail. Clark Run is beautiful. The trail is a good workout. Thanks to a prior review that indicated a issue locating the trail around mile marker 3, we figured it out. The Boulder field is both challenging and fantastic. We completed the entire loop, scrambling around a blow down. A small copperhead snake was spotted near the end of our hike.

Beginning and end were difficult. The trail along the creek is very narrow. The drop off is straight down to the creek if you make a mis step.

One of my favorite trails because of the low volume of hikers. I enjoy trails that are off the beaten path, and I don't encounter anybody while hiking. It makes for some excellent solitude in the wilderness. One of my favorites to do early in the year because Clark Run has more water flowing. This was my second time doing the entire loop. The first 3/4 miles are rigorous, as the trail elevates along the run, but it is well worth it. Going counterclockwise, the final ~1 mile is tough to traverse due to the rocks and boulders. Great views.

This was an excellent hike for this time of year. As you can see from the map you have some nice elevation gains. A few nice views along the way. Can get confusing near mile marker 3 with the snowmobile trails intermixing with the hiking trail. On top of that some elitist type went through with black paint and covered most of the blazes so you may need to pause every now and again to find which way the trail leads. If the ground is wet or even covered with damp leaves I would go counter clockwise as the grade gets pretty rough to the left of the creek. This was one of the better hikes around the Johnstown area without a large water feature.

I love this trail. It is my go to when I don't know where else to go. It is a great half day hike and is easy enough for a beginner and has a ton of interesting features. If you go to the right of the loop first you will hike up the gorge along the water and if you hike to the left first you will see a small overlook of the river and then come to a massive boulder field.

Hiked this years ago, from what I remember it had pretty good elevation and some nice views. The trailhead is at the bottom of RT 403 if you are familiar with the area.
