Overall a very nice trail with great views and lake and beach access, not too strenuous. The mosquitoes were the only thing I didn't enjoy.

This trail takes the hiker from a campground/day use area to the beach. Along the way, one is immersed in a rainforest of lush vegetation, including lichen, moss, fern and blooming trees - in May. The trail is moderately difficult due to the elevation changes and it’s mainly single-trail nature. Yet, if the hiking is leisurely, it’s an easy trail due to its soft surface that is only intermittently disrupted by intruding roots. We were hiking with our 32-months-old daughter. About half-way, one passes by the dunes and has to traverse a narrow section on sand. It was raining when we hiked, and the wet sand good be tricky to navigate for inexperienced hikers. We did not have the time to explore the Three-mile Lake, but the view from the trail over the lake convinced us to come back soon and take a swimming break. Overall, it is one of the most beautiful hikes I have taken outside of alpine environments. The perfect hike for “forest bathing”.

Backpacked in at night with a group of Scouts. Trail well defined and easy to negotiate with headlamps. Fairly busy at the lake but the weather was ideal for October. No problems finding camping spots for 6 adults and 12 scouts even by headlamps. Beautiful location with access to water for filtering. Highly recommended.

Minor elevation gain over 3 miles to reach great views of both freshwater lake & ocean. Found a camp site at the edge of the trail, but didn't find a defined trail to the shore. I accessed lake via steep dune. Not sure if there is a better way to enjoy the beautiful lake.

Beginning of the trail is still in good condition however the trail down to the lake is pretty much gone so is the beach! The trail down to the ocean is still there but is being overgrown. We saw no other travelers. The main road to get to the trailhead I recommend a pickup or SUV there are huge potholes!

BEAUTIFUL

A definite elevation gain right at the beginning and in the middle of this hike. It was a beautiful hike, and perfect in early September. There is a point at which you are on a sand dune but also in forest...so lovely. Saw a blue heron at the lake. Met no other hikers despite several hours on the trail. The several bridges on the trail were in excellent repair.

excellent trail. very diverse in land types. only pain was the sand, however it wasn't too bad all in all. I would go back, but beware of summer time as the beach is closed off (to a degree) as it is a nesting area for a protected species.

An excellent trail with diverse environments: forest, dunes, ocean and, especially, the swimmable Threemile lake with sandy bottom. It is not often that one can make a splash on the way, ponds/lakes/creeks sometimes have rocky bottom that one can injure feet in. Highly recommended.

A nice August morning hike. This was s perfect day to hike this trail. Great trail with lots of greenery and forest type hike. Don't forget to have $5 cash on you. This is a pay site. Worth the $5.

We did the entire loop which includes another trail that loops around. Total distance 7.5 miles. We used the directions from google thru this app and it lead us to a random spot. The actual trail is a half mile further up from where the directions lead. The map at the trailhead indicated there was a 1 mile walk to meet to the connecting point for be other trail. Note DO NOT GO TO THE BEACH TRAIL! There is no indicator where you can connect to the other trail. Follow the dunes trail. All in all it was very beautiful! Just know what your getting into before you go.

My wife and I went on this hike today (the last day of 2015) and the weather was cold but absolutely stunning. It's just a little less than three miles to the edge of the lake and the highest point is about half way when you do the out-and-back hike. We hiked on a beautiful day following a lot of coastal rain and I was very pleased that the condition of the trail was good. We only had one place that was a little mucky. If you like hiking in the forest, this is your hike. The ocean was visible in a couple of places but the true feature of this hike is the forest. We live nearby and we didn't even know about this trail until today and we are definitely going to do this trail again. My wife and I are hobby hikers and the elevation climb was a good workout for us. This trail is NOT designed for those in wheelchairs, scooters, or other rolling assistance devices. This trail is not paved.

An easy, beautiful and relaxing walk/hike through some rolling trails, dunes and beach. We started at the wrong trail head at 11pm in the dark so our maps only confused us. We ended up wandering with our head lamps and eventually found the hidden lake and set up camp. It was nice to wake up by the lake and be able to make a few minute hike to the beach. The best advice I can give is don't wear mesh shoes, they will get packed with sand and really hurt your toes. Wear solid hiking boots and bring some flip flops or sandals for camp, your feet will thank you.

The trail is good with no major problems. You only skirt one dune along the trail. This would be a great first backpack trip for people with younger kids. Once arriving at the lake you have to go down a steep dune in order to reach it. Going down is fine, it's the climbing back out part that isn't as fun. It was pretty and peaceful though without too many people at all.

If you hike this trail in the late summer, you can find Chanterelle mushrooms and huckleberries along the trail, and blackberry and peppermint growing under the third bridge. Although I've hiked this several times at different times of the year, I've not encountered the hummingbirds. The guide is a bit off in the description of things, but it's no problem to get where you're going. All in all, a fun little hike on a non-crowded trail.
