Hiking at Fort Hill A total of eleven miles of hiking trails exist at Fort Hill, offering some of the best hiking in the entire state of Ohio. Because of the relatively long length of the preserve's three trails, they are best suited for hiking enthusiasts. Fort Trail - 2.2 Miles The Fort Trail ascends Fort Hill from base to ridge (a tough steep climb for those of us who spend most of our time at a desk!), enters the enclosure through one of the ancient gateways, and follows the wall of the earthwork for a considerable distance, eventually looping back to the parking lot. It is important to mention that the earthwork enclosure is not always immediately noticeable to hikers. Built two thousand years ago, and covered for centuries with trees and falling leaves, only a geologist or a history-buff would quickly notice the man-made qualities of the landscape. Prepare to have a discerning eye.

After many years I returned to Fort Hill and hiked the trail with my dog on a cool December Sunday afternoon, a couple days after heavy rainfall. It was as beautiful as I remembered it. Not a soul. Ample parking, several picnic tables had been vandalized. There is no running water and the restrooms are primitive, so be prepared... The trail head and exit are well marked. Splits on the trail are also marked, but that's all for this trail. For the most part it is easy to follow despite being covered by leaves. Only a few places were muddy or the leaves on the ground so wet that it became slippery. If you go counter clockwise you have a 400 foot climb in half a mile to the top (grade up to 30%), which is the toughest part. Once you reach the hilltop the trail continues for half a mile, this time flat, where you can catch up your breath and contemplate surrounding hills. When you are ready to leave the hilltop there is a sharp descent for 1/10 mile. The ground in both, climb and descent, have plenty of rocks and roots, making the hike a bit tricky at times in those areas. Following the initial descent the trail borders the hilltop for almost one flat mile. Here the trail is wider and the terrain has no obstacles other than the occasional fallen tree that you must go around. Finally there is a second descent, gradual this time, almost 1/2 mile long to the parking area. I rate this trail 5 stars because it challenges me (only initially), and I enjoy its beauty and solitude. I'm sure in warmer seasons foliage, flowers and birds make it even more enjoyable.

We are 63 and 65. Alittle harder than anticipated, because leaves covered trail and any obstacles under them.

mid-April hike up hill to the old native american earthworks at the top. Note, these works are not very apparent. Very cool place though, a great place to sit and contemplate. Many wild flowers along the way. Just beautiful! There is a nice little parking lot at the trail head with a rock shelter (picnic area) built by the CCC. Nice area, saw only a few other hikers on a Saturday.

I took this trail in late fall walking 5 dogs. The steep park was exhausting. the 14yr old dog got carried part of the way. With overcast skies It was a little spooky at the top. Leaf fall obscured the trail in many places. Vast in area. The purpose of construction is unknown. My favorite theory is that it is a sports complex for inter-tribal games, Olympic style.

Trail was slick in places but overall a good experience. Thanks to the person who left a walking stick at the trail head. It kept me from becoming part of the forest floor several times. I made sure I put it back for the next hiker in need.

We went on a cold winter day. Nice little trail. Starts with a steep incline that made me question my own existence. After you reach the top it’s flat and easy. We would for sure do it again!

Very nice trails around the fort hill. On the South East corner of the fort flat (through the saplings) there is an obvious deep depression.

I completed the fort trail a few months ago. not to bad of a trail. the first 400ft or so is all up hill, just enough to get your heart rate up. once on top its mostly flat, but you get to see some earthworks.

Nice trail mostly cleared from the June 29th wind storm. Strenuous climb to begin, but levels off for an easy walk in the wood
