Mountain Views, Lush valleys, Long walk beside the river Beginning the hike you start to climb. The first mile and a half is a descent incline (at one point you will climb 600 feet in less than a quarter of a mile. Take lots of water because the first 2 miles are dry. This hike is beautifl during the fall because you can see a greater distance. There are great views on the way up. If you can survive the first hour and a half, it is literally all down hill from there. You will descent from Sharpy Mountain for about a half of mile and then you will climb again for 200 or 300 feet. At that time, (this should be about 2 hours into your hike), you will see a trail that goes to the right- Wagon Road Gap. Follow this trail down. After a short distance, you will feel like you found the Garden of Eden. Once you get to a large opening, you will hear the river. Turn right onto South Mills River Trail. It will lead right to the river. You will find a trail back 100 feet that goes to the right and to a swinging bridge.

Great trail for a November hike. You can see the mountains in the distance this time if year. Lots of leaves makes the trail challenging since it is hard to see the rocks and roots under them. Greatly enjoyed the hike. Push past your desire to turn around at the beginning. Once you get past the first 1.6 miles it is an easier trail to hike.

The trail is poorly marked and I found myself way off course by the fork of Bradley Creek and Riverside trail. Ended up following Riverside across the river multiple times and finally found an extremely steep shortcut trail that lead to vinyard gap and eventually to the parking lot. Keep your eyes out for the second swinging bridge because I never found it.

This trail is honestly miserable. The hike is very difficult there’s spider webs everywhere and there is no payoff what so ever. The trail is confusing there’s no view and it’s overall just really really annoying.

Took the dog on this hike - he loved the creek on Southern Mill road trail. Swing bridges were cool. Wagon town trail section was not trafficked and pretty over grown. turkey ridge trail was boring, no views, tunneled by mountain Laurel and we were constantly swatting away spiderwebs. could be gorgeous if the flowers we're in bloom. overall- this is not a great hike, but would be perfect for a quiet trail run if you like technical footing/steep because of the eroded run off.

Amazing hike!! It took us 3:45 hours not including the 15 min brake. My husband and myself are over 60 and in pretty good shape, and the first mile and a half was challenging - but it is just the way we like it!! Steep at the beginning, muddy on and off, nice and flat towards the middle and plenty of hiking next to the river. There are 2 hanging bridges along the way that cross the river. We will definitely do it again.

The hike along the river was very picturesque, however there were no real views from the trail. I would rate this as a moderately difficult trail. The road to the hike is rough, we drive a Prius, so be forewarned.

I hiked the vineyard gap trail. It was a trek up to the ridge top and then you followed the ridge for miles. It was stellar. Many different views of the ridges in either direction. Was difficult in some spots but overall I’ll be back to hike again.

Steep the whole way up. No overlook, some slight views when there are no leaves. Flat picnic spots at the top.

I hiked this loop on Thursday at noon. Several cars in parking lot but saw no one on the trail. Nice winter views. Steep first half mile. Next half mile gentler down and up. Third half mile steeper than the first. Wild flowers were not out yet. Lots of mountain Laurel , rhododendron, dog hobble, sourwood and some hemlocks. I took a break at a large campsite with several dead trees flagged for removal. I would not camp there until the trees are removed. The two swinging bridges were fun and bouncy. 8 stream crossings. Once or twice a rivlet ran down the middle of the trail, making it muddy. Walking along the River was lovely. Managed to miss the horse poop on the last mile to the parking lot.

I was on a 3 night backpacking trip so I didn't do the day hike loop shown here instead I did the entire length of Turkey Pen Gap trail. I started late Saturday afternoon so I did camp down on the Wagon Road Gap to be near a water source. When they label this trail difficult, they mean it. The inclines are very steep and challenging at times especially when you have close to 40 pounds on your back. The trail itself is in good shape and the views through the leafless trees are nice. The end of Turkey Pen Gap runs into Black Mountain trail which is a truly beautiful trail. This was my first camping trip this year and my second time starting from the Turkey Pen trailhead. Love this area and will be back when it's warmer to do the length of the South Mills trail just to play in the river.

Great trail. Fun water crossings due to all the recent rain. Think I calculated an 11% grade for the first 1.5 - 2 miles and part of it is a 20% grade. Great workout if enjoy a challenge. Look forward to doing it again. Good winter hike because long range views. Lots of Laurel so may feel claustrophobic in summer.

nice trail, a bit muddy, and watch the manure

Again, all trails mileage description is WAY off. The actual mileage for this loop from Turkey Pen gap to wagon to South Mills River was 11.86 miles. The two swinging bridges were fun to cross and there weren’t any incidents of wet feet during this hike. Road going up to the parking lot was in good condition there were not any views though perhaps there will be more once the foliage is down. Next time I will bring a bathing suit though because there are certainly a lot of places where it would’ve been easy to swim in the river on the way back to the car. Note: you will see mountain bikers on this trail.

Hiked today. First third fairly rigorous. Uphill most of the way. Views would be nice in the fall/winter. Second two thirds very lush. Downhill most of the way and runs beside the river so, plenty of water for the dogs. If you have any.

The first 2.5 miles are extremely strenuous with nearly straight uphill portions then downhill. You can cut over on wagon gap trail then come down south mills river trail to make the second half of the hike very easy. Low traffic though we did run into a horse drawn wagon on the way back!

Have hiked sections of the trail at different tomes of the year. It is especially beautiful during the fall.

The first few miles were extremely muddy, making any type of running difficult. Make sure you wear waterproof boots. The Wagon Road Gap trail was a peaceful walk through the woods, getting a bit strenuous near the end. The last couple miles were a tad annoying. I could have knit a spider silk sweater from all of the webs I walked through. Saw a black bear running away into the woods. I did enjoy the two suspension bridges. I think this would have been more enjoyable biking. It will also help if you have a 4x4 vehicle, as the road up is a bit rough.

Be sure to bring extra hiking shoes and socks! Most of the bridges are washed out! Also download the map from pro before heading out because the trail is not marked and very overrun. Be ready for an all out hike with many challenges including wading rushing water.

Has a great range from fast pace down hill riding to slow long gentle slopes. Also great views

Pretty tough at the beginning but quickly levels out and is mostly flat. Enjoyable but no overlooks or anything spectacular.
