In the spring wild flowers grow at trailside, and the views of the river at the tower are breathtaking. You are standing on a ledge about 400 feet above the river. You can also continue down to the river. Crossing the river is not recommended here. When you get back to your car, go the extra mile down SR-1238 to Wisemans View, The views of the Gorge, Hawksbill Rock, and Table Rock are outstanding there. Its only a short easy walk down to the viewing platforms.

This was such a fun trail! It is a steep climb down on the way in and then a steep climb up on the way out but it’s a lot of fun if you know what your in for. I went after a very heavy rain so the first half was more liking hiking a creek than a trail but I went in expecting some water.

Don’t stop at the end of the trail! Keep going. Follow the trail to the right to get down to the Linville River. Totally worth the extra work!

This was a nice trail, it was a little narrow but that didn’t bother us. Getting there wasn’t difficult-I wouldn’t call it a rough road. It’s a dirt road that has a few iffy spots, otherwise pretty easy to find.

Very rocky and lots of roots, but it was a nice hike. Once you reach the end KEEP GOING towards the right and around then UP the tower. It’s beautiful up there!!

This is a really fun trail for more experienced hikers out there who don’t mind narrow paths, rock scrambling, and great views. I wouldn’t recommend any beginners on this trail or else they will still be mad at you 1.5 years after you take them there, haha! But if you keep going down the mountain from the rock stacks, there’s a great waterfall and swimming area. You can slide off the waterfall, but I’ve found that taking a cheap little pool tube down it is just as fun (during the warmer months, of course). Stay safe and take at least 2 other people with you!

This trail is filled with roots and rocks and can be very slick when damp or rainy. The view is worth it all!

Very pretty trail, lots of shade! Opens up to some nice overlooks, then after reaching Babel Towers you can backtrack a bit and take a trail to the right to make it down to the water (pretty strenuous with overgrowth and lots of rock scrambles). The hike is fairly tough with lots of decline going there and therefore incline on the way back. Trail stays pretty tight and overgrown, so pants and sleeves needed if sensitive to leaves and brush!

Awesome trail with a great swimming hole at the bottom, however it is a bit of a rough trail down if you’re not very spry and be sure to remember the trail going back out. If you’re dogs love to swim it’s perfect for them however smaller dogs you’re gona have to help bossy them up at the least.

Trail is a steep V-shape out and back. Nothing but roots and rocks all the way down & up, not enjoyable. Don’t be fooled by the short length. Wouldn’t recommend, there are better views & more enjoyable trails to be seen & had elsewhere in the area.

Absolutely fantastic trail, totally doable with my fairly athletic parents. Tower is amazing views but easy to miss. Just keep blazing straight to find tower and the water/waterfall is A1

Out and back- down grade to end with the trail offering two directions to get closer to the river. I did not go far enough to see river this time. Trail is unmarked but cleared. Probably want to put on hiking shoes/boots for this one. No water points (especially if you have a dog) so bring plenty of water. As others have mentioned, traveling down 105 to get to the trailhead is not for the faint hearted- lots of washouts and would be best traveled in a truck, especially if there has been a recent rain. I drive it in my Ford Escape and pushed it to its limit (I think).

Great hike, only passed one other hiker. Two or three spots for spectacular views and if you take the trail down to the right once you reach the rock outcropping you can get down to the river and cool your feet and have a picnic on big rock.

My family hike this trail to the bottom and then did another 2.5 along the river (no trail/primitive trail) as a prep hike for a backcountry Yellowstone trip. The steepness made for great exercise, while the well maintained trail kept it pleasant. The views and the hike are great. It's beautiful along the river with numerous places to wade or swim. Make sure you bring plenty of water or a filter to refill from the river. There are plenty of options to add significant mileage to the hike in any direction. We only did a day hike, but there is primitive backpack camping in the gorge, so extending your trip is an easy matter. We past several nice area along the trail that you could bunker down for the night quite comfortably. Beautiful area. This is not an easy hike. You need to be in good health and fairly good shape. The climb out is a good grind.
