Scrambling

This trail is a great trail with excellent views. It has many steep inclines that require scrambling so, dogs and children are not recommended.

Did this route to Jimmy Dolan Notch, up Twin, back to JDN, up Indian Head and down the east side of the summit back to Predinger Rd. Didn’t really think there was much scrambling, if any, as I expected based on reviews (but I am an avid hiker and did a lot of Class 3 and 4 scrambles in Colorado). Thought it was a fairly easy but fun route. Fair amount of water and mud on the trail. A lot of wet leaves and slippery rocks. Poles definitely helped on the descent with the slickness. Decent amount of view points but some trees didn’t have leaves which might have given us more views than during summer season. Also, I see a lot of recordings for this route that stopped at the South summit of Twin Mountain instead of going past to the true summit. The South summit has great views but the actual summit is a bit past that. Make sure to check your track to ensure you get to Twin if that’s your goal.

We did the hike through Jimmy Dolan notch first to Twin and then looped around Indian Head. It may be hard in the winter, but at this time of year it is very much doable for most hikers. Few scramples and great views along the way.. The trail is well marked.

A nice hike but almost 100% in the forest, with very occasional views. Some pretty steep parts. Some muddy parts. Probably not the most scenic in the area but a good workout!

Hiked the “T” up Jimmy Dolan’s notch. Twin had great views while not much on Indian Head. The trail to the Devil’s Path was rocky and a steep at times but nothing compared to the DP. Nice weather to start then got some dark clouds. Great hike.

Great hike but only okay views. Did this on 7/20 going counterclockwise - good hike up to Twin Peak, with some decent views of the Catskills. Passed Indian and didn’t realize it - descent is tough after that. Couple of big rock scrambles and a few spots where I had to throw my poles down. Overall a moderate, well-travelled trail with a good amount of people going in each direction. Picked the hottest day of the year (saw 95° on my phone) so planning on coming back to do the full Devils Trail when it’s a bit cooler and can see some good leaves.

Great trail, first time I really felt challenged by the terrain. I knew there'd be steep sections and some climbing but I thought there were maybe one or two cliff bands to scramble up and there were way more than that. The views were A+ but I thought there would be more of them based on my maps. South Twin, the ledges on the ascent to Twin, and Sherman's Lookout were all excellent though. Underestimated my moving time and started late, wound up coming down Jimmy Dolan in the pitch black with pouring rain, which was rough but definitely a better choice than starting there and finishing with Devil's Path.

Started this trail at 9:30 and ended at 2 PM. So about 4.5 hours essentially. A bit of mud on the trail. If you are an avid hiker, this trail is not very difficult. There are a few scrambles and a bit of climbing. I did this trail in an anti-clockwise motion. The plan is to return soon to do the full devils path as a day trail. I do not recommend that you bring your dog(s) on this trail as there are quite a few scrambles and a bit of climbing required. Saw a few dogs having a tough time moving.

We had fabulous weather so the views we excellent. Hard trail due to some tough scrambles and constant rock and root footing except for the last 2 miles. No dog or kid friendly.

Excellent hike with some amazing views of the Ashokan Reservoir and Hudson River that nabs 2 of the 35 High Peaks. That being said, it's also ridiculously difficult. There are a few places, mostly on the eastern side of Indian Head, where the trail requires you to ascend/descent a near-vertical rock slope. The eastern half of the Devil's Path is notoriously difficult and this hike includes some of the hardest parts. Definitely not for kids and leave the dogs at home. Expect the ascents/descents to be slow going.
