Easy walk around Sterling Lake, historic furnace, mines and ruins Be sure to check out the displays in the visitors center. If you call ahead, you might be able to arrange for a tour of the furnace and mine area. Catch blue blaze trail in front of the visitors center going west. Pass foundation of old church on right, then enter the woods.Cross wooden bridge (over old sluice for water wheel) and the furnace is a short side trip to the left. Built in the 1700's, it was restored in the 1950's. Continue on blue blazed trail. Comes out on a road and follows it for a while, then enters the woods and continues around the lake, crossing an inlet on a berm. The trail the turns south and begins to climb. Follow back to visitors center.

Did this on a warm day in January. Very muddy about halfway through but manageable. Really interesting trail. Easy for the most part but you’ll get a sweat in.

Came for the winter for the first time. Beautiful and quiet. Hike with my dog and saw nobody the whole hike. Will do it again.

This trail intersects with some lovely 17c iron forge ruins, definitely diverge to peak at them!

The first two miles were on the wide woods road. The trail back from the sand beach area was not as well maintained. The trail was overgrown and especially bad in the power line right of way. We will return to Sterling Lake and hike to the sand beach and turn around and hike back on the west side of the lake.

Good relaxing hike. Not too long or too short. Nice view of the lake and cool views of few swamps. Recommend it.

Beautiful hike with great views for about 1/2 of the hike of gorgeous Sterling Lake. I would say it would be an easy hike if I had not been carrying my toddler in a backpack but because of that I rate it as moderate. Loved it!

Amazing views of the lake and the Lakeville Iron Works trail. Longer than expected so prepare accordingly.

Only reason I think this is moderate must be because of the 4.5 miles. This is a pretty easy hike. Walking the right side of the lake first lets you finish on the more interesting side. The lake is beautiful with many interesting views. I gave this five stars for the beauty and the pleasure of an easy walk.

Pretty easy hike. Last part is a lot of up hill rocks. Very very buggy.

There was a tree down across the trail near the beginning of the hike which made it difficult to pick up the blue blaze markers, but we managed to get around the obstruction. The rangers will clear it with chainsaws once the weather cools off.

Pretty easy hike, the first .8mi. is up hill but not too difficult. If you go counterclockwise the last 1.5mi. of the trail has beautiful views of the lake. Can be very bugy in warm weather. The visiter center is worth checking out, and is air-conditioned.

This is a great family trail. Nothing difficult. My 65 year old mother did this with us without any problems. We saw frogs, a turtle, and some type of neon colored dragon flys. The bugs were a pretty normal amount but we use a lot of spray. The lake is nice but no swimming allowed. Good amount of parking, quiet, went a long time without seeing other hikers and we went on a sunday afternoon. We clocked the distance at 4.74 miles. Trail well marked. I wish i could give it 3 1/2 stars. i recommend!

This is a greay hike with beautiful viewscapes. There is a lot of plant diversity & great places to fish for freshwater organisms. Recommended for a family hike.

One of our favorites. Did the loop in March. Today a quick in and out with lunch by the lake. For Memorial Day, virtually empty.

A lovely hike that’s very well shaded and easily marked. There are great pockets that show the beautiful landscape and lakeside view. Halfway around the trail is a small beach where several hikers stop to take a rest and dip their feet in the water. It was a great spot to take a breather and chat with fellow hikers. Went on the hike on Memorial Day Weekend around 11am and it was still not crowded! A hidden gem. Per the ranger at the visitor center, the mud was only due to a beaver that had recently made a dam. Would highly recommend this hike for families, anyone wanting a moderate hike, or dog lovers.
