My dad and I completed this on August 23 2019. This was one of my favorite hikes so far. The views throughout are stunning. Started from Elk lake parking lot at 5 am, there were already 9 cars in the lot and it’s not a huge parking lot, so I’d make sure to get an early start if you want a space. There is an overflow lot 2 miles away worst case scenario. I’d highly recommend going up the Macomb slide first as there is a lot of loose rock and dirt and it is steep, I would not want to descend down it after such a long day. I’ve read reviews that recommended going up on the right, but I think it’s challenging no matter what side you hike up. Right after the slide there are 2 steep sections but then you’re at the peak. South Dix was really cool on the way up, you’ll have lots of views. Grace has a huge peak with amazing views and you can walk all around to get different angles of the surrounding mountains. Hough, “huff,” was rocky with lots of roots but was a normal high peak trail as you’d expect. Also great views here and cool because you can see Beckhorn, which is where you’re headed next. Right before you peak Beckhorn there is a challenging V shaped rock. I would recommend going straight up the V. I read comments about there being a bushwhack toward the right of the V shaped rock—do not do this! I did, and it was essentially the side of the mountain and all loose dirt with super tiny roots to hold onto. Definitely not a safe bushwhack as I was crawling up using my knees. Especially if it was wet would really not recommend, the V shaped rock is the better option. Once you’re at Beckhorn you’re essentially at Dix, which also has a large peak area to walk around on. Descending the Beckhorn trail is very steep but fun with some technical pieces and beautiful views as you descend. The end was rough for us as we were tired and it was steep and rocky almost the whole descent down. It took us about 2 hours to get to the base of Macomb slide, 25 min to climb the slide, arrived at Macomb peak 30 min later, then got to S Dix in about 45 minutes, got to Grace peak in about 40 minutes, from the start of Hough trail it took us 55 minutes to get to Hough peak, and from Hough peak about 1.5 hours to get to Dix peak. All in all took 13 hours for us to complete with a total of 2 hours spent at all the peaks combined. Drank 6 liters of water each.

This was the most difficult single-day hike I've done to date. We got a "late" start, leaving the Elk Lake trailhead at 9:30 on Monday (Labor Day). Due to rain the previous couple of days, the parking lot was fairly empty, so I didn't have to bike from Clear Pond like I did last time. But the trail was wet, slightly muddy and a bit treacherous on rocks and rooted parts of the trails. After slogging past the campsites and lean-tos at Slide Brook trail junction, we went up Lillian Brook trail. The trail was not difficult until we were half a mile to the Dix ridge line, where the herd path "trail" got extremely steep in ascending the 800' to the col just south of Hough summit. The Dix Trail to Hough was no picnic either. We reached the summit of Hough around 1pm (we did some mushroom hunting on the Lillian Brook trail which was fun, but burned some time we could have used at the end of our hike). We ate at the summit before pushing on to the Beckhorn. We encountered a brief rain shower on the ridge between Hough and the Beckhorn which slicked up the trail somewhat for the rest of the hike. The crux of the ridge running came as we emerged from the forest just south of the Beckhorn summit block. The trail appeared to go right, but when we followed it, we were confronted with a steep and exposed climb through delicate alpine vegetation on the east flank of the Beckhorn. It didn't seem right so we down-climbed and found the famous split rock with the vertical crack. You MUST go up the crack to reach the summit block of the Beckhorn. Upon reaching the summit of the Beckhorn, you will see the summit boulders of Dix a short distance to the north. A quick descent and ascent gets you to the summit of Dix. From there we backtracked to the Beckhorn and descended the steep and slabby Beckhorn Trail which seemed to go on forever before intersecting the Hunter's Pass Trail 1.8 miles below the Beckhorn. It was a long hike out from here, and we were hiking out with headlamps for the last 20 minutes. All told, we hiked 12.5 miles in just over 10 hours. It was a great experience and I'm glad we got to hike all five 46ers of the Dix Range this year.

On this hike we only hiked Macomb South Dix and Grace Peak as a traverse from Elk Lake out to 73. It was a nice hike with mud in certain places but overall a great hike.

We only hiked Dix and Hough via the Beckhorn Trail and out the Lillian Brook Trail. The bugs were terrible and the winds were strong up on the range. Overall a nice hike that I'll go back and finish.

This is a long day, lots of miles but once your on top of the ridge you will get lots of great views. Once you start working your way up, there is no water so be sure to bring enough. I traveled down the trail to the beck horn trail. From there it is a 2.3 mile incline. It is not too bad but it is long. Once you top of the Beck Horn, follow the yellow markers to the left and then it is about 10 minutes to Dix, there is a small marker on the summit. Back track to the Beck Horn and follow a small trail to the left of the Beck Horn. It is very narrow and leads all the way to Hough. There is no marker (or atleast one I could find) but a small lookout. Keep following the trail down to the S. Dix, it is a little steep but nothing crazy. Nothing to hard, like I said, just a long day. On S. Dix, once again I couldn't find a maker but a small Cairn. The trail is small and goes either left or right. Go left, and it goes to E. East. It is about an 1 hour away. I couldn't find the marker but I did see the rocks from other pictures of the summit so I'm pretty sure I was there. Another hour back to the small cairn and followed that towards Macomb. You'll come to an open rock face. Just keep following it down towards the mountain in front of you. Some of the cairns are a little out of place. Just head down hill. At the base you'll head up Macomb. It's about .5 mile ish to the summit. Macomb is marked. After the summit keep following the path down. You will come to the famous Macomb Slide. It is a bit of a pain and it is loose and dangerous. Coming down, stay to the right. There are several cairns in place. Follow the trail to the right, it goes up hill a little bit then down hill all the way to main trail. Follow it left 2.2 miles back to the parking area. Good luck!

Great hike, wish that I had made it a 2 day. I tried to do the loop in 1 day and only made it to Hough before I had to turn back the herd path to make it out before dark

Did trail last year and completed the accent in the morning after sleeping in leanto at base. The view at top is spectacular all round. Some high speed gusts at the top. I would warn about the leanto outhouse area at base of Dix being so unclean that even a rat would shy away in disgust.
