Uphill all the way. Trailhead is just past McMillan campground on right side. Well maintained trail. Vegetation changes as you get closer to the top; more wildflowers, pines and firs.

Steep hike the whole way, but has a very nice view from the fire tower at top.

steep, switchbacks and high altitude made us all huff and puff, but what a view from the top! The ranger was so nice, we all got to go on his viewing platform. The shade made it a pleasant temperature but in the summer you have to always expect some rain in the afternoons. We got some!

It was an enjoyable enough hike with decent elevation gain at the beginning. Meeting and taking to the range at the lookout was nice. Black Peak was worth hiking to as it’s the highest in the PA range, but not much of a view. Quick hike best enjoyed with company.

The ranger at the summit invited us up and we had a good conversation with him. Quick elevation gain with the high altitude left most of us sucking wind on the way up, but we had great views and big trees to hike under.

It’s a leg burner to the top. As someone else said the trail head is just north of mile marker 14 but you have to park on other side of road. Not much parking. Maybe two cars at best. Cross hwy 15 and the trailhead is right there. About 5 miles total bottom to top and back. Pretty cool hike. You should do it.

moderately steep, scenic, quiet. USFS cleaning up deadfall and snow-toppled trees. However, there are sections towards top with many beetle killed pines of which some lean toward trail. Be observant and listen to reduce risk of getting smacked by a dead tree. I used this hike to prep for a Grand Canyon trip given almost 1700' up and back down. Saw no other hikers. A gem through oak, pine, spruce and fir trees.

Did this hike in early September with a party of four and only saw one other hiker This trail has a steady uphill grade to the summit with picnic table and a park type grill near fire lookout tower

This trail continues beyond signal peak. If you follow the service road down a bit you will hit the trail again which follows the ridge line for a mile or two before hitting the CDT which makes for a less steep hike overall and it can be taylored to any length. A very nice hike.

Trailhead is about 1/4 mike N of milepost 14 on NM15. First 1/4 mile of trail a challenge to track through a marsh but easy after that. Not as steep as expected. Hiked trail in March and was the only hiker. Can't go past Signal Peak tower due to USFS restrictions from forest fire 2 years ago.
