My wife and I hiked this loop counterclockwise like some reviewers suggested. My gps recorded 6.9 miles for the loop. The last 1/4 of the hike was along a stream and very easy with a slight descent. Saw a flock of turkeys and tons of elk tracks. Very beautiful with differing ecosystems. Only saw 2 other hikers Lots of loose scree on the trails so footing was tricky at times. We agree that this is a great moderate hike.

Went up 92 and then back down 93 (counter clockwise). Debate on which route to take- depends on what you want. If you want a workout at beginning with smooth downhill at the end go counter-clockwise. If you want a smooth trail with gradual elevation change consider up and back up T93. There is no great “vista” either way. I wouldn’t prefer to go down 92, it’s steeper. It took me 2:05 at 5.92 miles per farming gps.

If you do the whole perk loop you’re going to get lots of different trail conditions. There are some pretty steep parts and some really pleasant easy sections. Lots of rocks in some areas. The trail signs were not particularly good especially on the top where you have a four-way intersection that says nothingIt would be smart to have a back up map or of course all trails app. Overall it was definitely a good workout!

If you take the steeper way first it's quite strenuous, I would consider it more than moderate. There are a few good views but not many, was hoping for more payoff after going up so much.

The trail was very nice. Scenery was beautiful. Unfortunately a thunderstorm came upon us and we were unprepared and had to turn back.

We agree with the other reviewer‘s, go up 92 first, follow the trail counter clockwise so you get the steep incline out of the way when you’re fresh. Glad we started early in the morning because there is not a lot of shade. Our family of four did it in three hours… We have a 13-year-old daughter and 12-year-old son… We brought plenty of water and snacks and everyone did fine. The only disappointing part is that the summit does not have a big climax.

Very beautiful. Steep inclines for a great workout. I’m glad we started early morning while we were fresh and it was cool. We went counter clockwise. Better to do the incline first and finish with the gorgeous green canyon. Saw and heard lots of wildlife. Listen for the mule deer snorts.

Follow the AllTrails map. Some of the trail signage is confusing. Full loop offers some great views of Sierra Blanca.

Enchanting but steep trail! Too steep for children and dogs. Bring hiking stick. We started at T93 and at the fork about 3 miles in, we took T93 which led us down the peak. One of the earlier trail marking signs was down. Looks like the a better choice would be to have taken trail marked T92 (1.7 mi). Did not find selfie spot. Our total round trip was 7 miles. Beautiful summit. Not for the faint of heart. Quite peaceful, great spot for meditation. Only encountered two other hiking pairs. Free, but limited parking, no trail fee.

Wouldn’t recommend for a dog. There is almost no shade and the rocks get so hot we had to stop, go to town and buy dog socks and try again. We made it about a mile in with the dog socks and decided to give up. I’m an avid runner so this would have been fine for me without the aged dog. Still would have been very hot tho.

Great trail so close to Ruidoso. My wife and I did the entire loop going up 93 and back on 92 (clockwise). Highly recommended route. We are in pretty good shape and stopped periodically to catch our breath and a 25 minute snack break and the hike was more like 4 hours. The trail (92) south of "the selfie spot" on the app turns into a jeep trail on its way back to the trailhead. If you follow the jeep trail it shortens the hike to 5mi but there is a switchback trail that does bypass the jeep trail and takes you to the trailhead without going through the gravel roads mentioned in other reviews. Thus making it a bit longer hike as in other reviews.

Clockwise is the way to go. The first 3 miles was very nice then the last 1 1/2 wear along a 4 wheel drive road. Not so nice. I would do just the out and back.

Awesome trail my new favorite

We absolutely loved this trail. We started off on 93, and ended at 92, it starts pretty gradual, at about 2.4 miles the incline kicked in and kept going. It was tougher than we expected, but not too hard. The only downside to this trail was all the large piles of branches everywhere. It's great that the trail is maintained, but the piles everywhere took away from the nature feeling. it does say its 5 miles, but my Garmin's watch and Samsung watch said 6.2 miles. and 1125ft elevation gain.

Very nice hike with some steep sections. Trekking poles help. Recommended.

This was a lovely trail on a gorgeous day: be advised that Strava clocked us at 6.7 miles to do the entire loop, and we GPS’d and stayed on trail. You choose to start on 93 or 92. We went out 93 and back 92 (clockwise) which we’d recommend. The first 2.5 are easy and idyllic...then the 20% grade starts and the next mile or two are hard. Elevation gain was 1260. The last 2-3 miles out are pretty steep declines, some with crumbling dirt and moving rocks; tiring on the ankles and knees. The last half mile is down a fire road with moving gravel and rock. We did the 6.7 in 1.5 hours and enjoyed it.

My wife and I did this trail no problem! The only thing is we got confused on what # trail we came up. We ended up making a small loop at the highest level and coming back out the same trail which was T93! It was a great trail and pretty well maintained!

Good trail with great scenary along the way. Make sure to have a couple of free hours to complete trail and make it back before dark. Trail was easy to follow with some steep inclines after t93 and t92 combine. Went down t93 and followed t92 till end. Great time. Worth the hike!

Very good trail. Not terribly easy with the steep terrain changes. It could be easy to get off the trail as there are other paths that branch off. Overall, a definite must do. Great scenery.

one of the best hikes I've been on to date, even better if you go a lil off trail and climb to the overlooks
