My navigator took us to an inaccessible service road 3 mi away from trailhead. We hiked in adding to the day. It was foggy until noon, clear for 15 minutes, and then a thunderstorm started brewing. Beautiful trail, forgot I was in New Mexico. There were several times in the first two miles where we picked the most likely of trails when two choices appeared. We eventually lost the trail and decided to scramble up the side to a peak. We found the trail as we were coming down the mountain. The trail is overgrown and has some small logs fallen on the trail, but very beautiful. No snow.

This is an experienced hike! I love the views and changes of scenery it gives but really be prepared. After 3.5 miles the trail is difficult to follow. I honestly would go with someone who has done it before. The switchbacks near the top are not exactly correct on this map but close enough to follow along. Also, for anyone going soon after this post you may wait a few weeks. After 8000 feet elevation there is a large amount of snow in some areas. Up to our knees at one point. I've climbed this before in around 4 hours but with the snow it took us near 6. You may give it a few weeks as it was 65 up there today and should melt relatively soon!

Amazing trail with a spectacular view of Eastern New Mexico! This is DEFINITELY a HARD trail and that's putting it mildly, take lots of water, have protective clothing, good hiking shoes, trekking poles and protection as you are in the middle of nowhere with wild animals (two legged ones scare me the most) and unpredictable trails (that are not always easy to follow) NOTE: You do not Conquer Capitan, she conquers you, and if shes nice she let's you see some of her splendor, if she doesn't want to let you up its no reason for 2 or 3 stars because of uncleared trails KEEP IT NATURAL, that's what makes her so awesome! Have ice pack and heating pad ready when you get home! Plan to have a whole day to devote when hiking this trail to summit. It's not an easy up and down but its rewarding! RESEARCH: FLAT EARTH

Took 4 people in Polaris Ranger. Great day trip. Went in early July 5 years ago. Preparing to take friends again very soon.

Not too bad of a trail. Doesn’t look like it is hiked very much and isn’t kept up. It will however kick your ass. I hike a few times a month and I couldn’t walk right for 2 days after tackling this beast.

Difficult but great hike. If you aren’t an experienced hiker make sure to set aside a full day starting early AM. A group of us backpacked during the day to camp overnight at the peak. Despite the strenuous path, it was well worth it. To give anyone an idea of the duration, we started at 10am and made it to the peak by 4pm. Not to mention that we were the fastest of the group. So start early if you want to make it up and down the mountain before sunset.
