Park in the Old Short Hills Park car park. Going clockwise, join the West Ridge trail (unblazed), keeping the grounds of Greenwood Gardens to your left. After about 1.1 miles, you'll turn right, joining Elmdale trail (blue blazes). Follow its twists and turns until the 2.6 mile mark. Then you have a choice to either head back to the lot, or continue westwards on the West Ridge trail. If you choose the latter, you'll be doing yourself a favor (and a mini loop of about a mile that gives great views of the West Branch of the Rahway River). You'll rejoin Elmdale to complete.

Pretty good overall. Trail was overgrown in places with lots of brush that looked like it could be poison ivy. Very quiet and I never saw another person on a beautiful summer afternoon.

We had a great time hiking this trail. We live nearby but are continuously amazed at how many different areas and trails the South Mountain Reservation has that we never knew about (before getting the AllTrails app). This was a new trail for us and, based on the small number of people we saw, not a lot of other people know about it. We liked the elevation changes and, although we were sometimes close to houses and roads, we generally felt like we were deep in a forest. We only heard a car from the road one time. The trail conditions are mostly good, with packed dirt in some parts and small rocks in others. The elevation changes kept the hike interesting though none lasted too long or were very steep. One thing to watch out for on this hike is the trail markings. They mostly don’t exist. We used the AllTrails app with GPS so it wasn’t a problem, but following a trail without it would be hard. Also, in places, long grass grew over the trail, which made it even harder to figure out directions (and raised the risk of ticks, though we don’t think we acquired any). Lastly, the route mapped out by AllTrails is a little strange in that it requires you to double back in order to cover it completely. As a result, the route is mostly a loop but then has one out and back part too. Overall, a really fun hike. Our dog loved it!

2.10.19. A really enjoyable quick and easy loop along the Westernmost part of the South Mountain Reservation. The Elmdale trail (blue) is quite twisty so you'll be covering more distance than you might imagine. Great views of the Rahway from the southernmost point of the hike. Here are my stats from the All Trails app as a guide: Distance: 3.6 miles Elevation Gain: 456 feet Moving Time: 1:09:49
