Had a great day completing the full UNH loop. First off...TRACTION required. This trail treats you to a variety of hiking conditions. Some areas of the trail were narrow and bordered by spruce trees, other areas featured huge boulders and still other locations were home to rare alpine plants. Allen's Ledge was a nice view but the best was to be had just below the summit from East Ledges. Spectacular views of many prominent peaks such as Mt. Chocorua, Three Sisters, Tipyramids and even to the Osceolas. A day out that is well worth the effort.

Great trail but please note that the beginning of the trail has been rerouted after the 2012 storm and the maps are outdated. This only applies to the beginning, and the new trail, going clockwise, leaves the main trail further south than the maps indicate. The trail is easy enough to follow, however.

Trail strarts level and then turns and begins to climb at moderate grades. I turned rt up the west end of the loop and proceded up to Allen Ledge which was a short steep climb off the main trail to a ledge with nice views to the NE. The trail then steepens and gets rougher with lots of rocks and roots. It climbs less gradually toward the top. with nice views toward Carrigan and Mt Washington looking back. Summit ledges has views from Carter Wildcat past the closeup of Passaconway and further west and northwest. Trail drops steeply and rough with drops over ledge steps. After a rapid descent it levels a bit through nice woods at the base of cliffs and then climbs to the East ledges with nice views and lots of room to sit and enjoy a bit of lunch. The trail exits the ledge alonga arrow trail at the very edge of vertical drops in a couple of places. Then descending moderately then crosses a brook an then climbs to the junction with the west loop section and descends gradually to the level section and back to the parking area. Nice trail with some challenging areas. Not a good choice when wet or icy. Makes a great snowhoe when there is plenty of snow to cover over the rougher areas.
