First, don't be stupid like me and do this hike with a friend. It is a difficult climb. Not for the beginner. Starts off with inclines that level off for the first mile. I swear the last 2.5 miles to 3 miles is just straight up climbing. You are climbing over rocks, tree roots and many areas there are loose stones. There is a spot before the ladders where steps were built to help with this climb but they are now covered in stones. The ladders are nice but they are showing their age and I'm guessing sooner rather than later they will need to be replaced with something. This mountain is very steep. You need to take your time coming down. It will take you just as long coming down as going up. If you don't pay attention you will twist an ankle. It's a great hike but as one reviewer put it is a mini beast. I have no idea how people are ending up off the trail. It's pretty well defined.

Did a peak bag up and back from Willey house via Kendron Flume trail. As others have mentioned the trail is not particularly well marked, but there are ample blue blaze markers and no moderately experienced hikers should have any difficulty. Lots of roots and some slippery parts from the beautiful Kendron Flume (about 1 mile) to the Willey ridge trail and the final ascent. The “ladders” are more like stairs, but a couple of flights are steep, so take care. Summit is only marked by a cairn, but there is a nice outlook just off summit . I’m 62 and made it up in a bit over 2 hours, but it actually took me longer to head down with the footing.

Great hike on a perfect day. Instead of doing the out and back, I opted to climb the Kendron flume trail which looked really steep but the trail that synced up with it on the way to Willey was really steep! Whoever set up those ladders deserves the noble peace prize! Scary but awesome. The rest of the day included, piles of rocks on the summit, and treed in views. The best part was the trail itself. A thin green carpet of moss covered everything, especially the white birch so it made a really cool contrast. This was especially true between field and tom. Once I got to the amc highland center, where I stashed a bike. I hoped on and rode 3 miles back to my car at the Willey memorial. The ride was great but the Willey story is way more interesting than this post. Check it out.

Two 65 year olds did this trail three days ago. As mentioned previously, this trail is not well marked in a number of places so you have to watch. Fallen and uncleared trees make it more confusing. Regardless it was a good hike. After lower switchbacks, the rest of the trail is pretty much straight up and challenging. The top is mostly tree covered but there is an outcrop at the top that provides a great view of the mountains and valley.

This was the worst marked trail that I have found hiking so far. I found myself off trail numerous times. Had to bail less than half up, trails are not broken in, very steep with mashed potatoes consistency. I will not be retrying this trail.

Would not recommend to begin her‘s. Crampons holes and other necessities required. Little to no trail visibility poorly marked.
