I would recommend this trail. The view from the summit of Avalon was beautiful. We added connected to A-Z Trail and then looped back around to Avalon Trail instead of just an out and back. Did this with my five year old and it was quite a scramble up to the summit of Avalon but she loved it. Mt Field has one decent viewpoint but was mostly tree covered. This was a fun 6.5-7 mile route. I would rate as moderate to difficult due to rock scrambling.

Hiked this with my wife and our sons who are 7 and 9. The hike itself wasn't terribly difficult or unusual in any way. Our final impression was that the length of the trail was the biggest concern for our family, yet both of our kids managed very well. The views from Avalon were wonderful while the views from Field were somewhat disappointing in that there were only two partial lookouts. We attempted to find geocaches on both peaks during our visit but only found the geocache on Field. Due to the extra distance we decided not to hike Mt. Tom. Therefore we hiked Backed down the Avalon trail to Mt. Avalon where we enjoyed the views a second time.
