Snowflower Mountain is a hidden gem and is certainly one of my favorite hikes in the Mount Rose Wilderness! The best time to do it is between May 1st-Nov. 1st, as the road to the upper part of Thomas Creek is seasonal and starting at lower trailhead will add an extra ~6 miles or so. The trail is well maintained until you deviate from the trail to the summit for the last 0.75 miles. The switchbacks about 4-5 miles in are tough but the views get better and better with each step you take. The wildflowers are beautiful in the summer and the aspen are incredible in the fall. The views of Mount Rose, Mount Houghton, and Relay peak, as well as the rest of the Mount Rose Wilderness are worth every step of this long hike!

Gates are closed for the season so plan an extra few miles to walk to the trail head.

Amazingly beautiful but VERY remote hike once you enter the Mt Rose Wilderness boundary. You will experience many different terrains which make this hike unique. I made it about 5.5 miles in toward the peak (only about 3 miles shy of the end), just past the Rim to Reno Marker when I came across a smaller black bear. Being alone and the fact that the bear was so close to the trail I decided to turn back around short of summiting the peak. Will definitely be back with friends to finish the whole thing!

Tough but beautiful I have run this four times this summer and it always looks like a different trail If you start at the lower lot the round trip is 24 miles and 4800 feet of elevation.

snow starts around the split for the rim to Reno, south loop is impassible but the north is ok for as far as I walked it.

This is a true gorgeous trail, for hikers and bikers, not for cars. Many different vegetation types and views. Totally recommended. I added the loop around the north on the way to the summit, and had a total of 18.5 miles. Therefore, I think the actual hike as presented here is a bit shorter than 17.9 miles. Perhaps more like 17 or 16.5. There was still a lot of snow on the loop, really a lot. Lost the trail many times and got dizzy scaling all those snow walls. All good fun though. Snow needs at least two more weeks to melt up there.
