Not to sure why it is listed as moderate? Seemed pretty easy to me? Is it because it was not paved the entire way? The scenery was very nice for late fall.

This is the hiking club trail. It heads out of the parking lot, down the stairs, along the St Croix for a section and then heads back into the woods just as you get to the trailhead that brings you up to the backpacking sites. Here the trail runs through the woods and then along the base of Afton Alps and then up the hill to the parking lot. So far the trail has not been all that spectacular. Once you get on the other side of the parking lot and past the interpretive center this is when it gets very pretty. The trail now goes through a half mile of restored prairie which has seasonally blooming wildflowers and native grasses! Gorgeous! There are also interpretative signs along this section about the restoring of the prairie. Loved this section the best. The trail ends back at the parking lot where it began. I’ve been all over the park on numerous trails and this is probably my least favorite other than the half mile of prairie.

The river is still high, so part of this trail is closed currently.
