This is a great opportunity to enjoy the Mt Greylock Reservation without actually following the crowds that go around the Greylock summit. The trail starts easy, going downhill on easy trails. Upon reaching the Cheshire Harbor trail, the trail gets a bit rough, and gains some elevation quickly. To return, you will use a nice portion of the Appalachian Trail. From Saddle Ball Mountain you can see beautiful views of Mt. Greylock, and just south of the mountaintop you will find another vista spot that will allow you to see upstate New York. There is plenty of opportunities to enjoy the flora and fauna of Massachusetts. Almost all of the microclimates are represented. Plenty of varieties of trees. And at the end of the hike, on the Jones Nose trail you can enjoy bird watching on a lightly wooded area (mostly a plain with beautiful wildflowers and scattered trees).

Wasnt a bad trail. was foggy so views were bad. otherwise would have a bad view. summit was marked by cairn, with some decent outlooks along the way.

*July 3, 2016* I hiked this trail back in July 3 along with Mt Greylock from the Jones Nose trailhead. The only way that you know that you're at the summit is by carins that are placed there. The hike along the AT was pretty much flat with a few little ups and downs.

Saddle Ball is a heavy moderate trail. I did it with some avid hikers that kept me moving at a quick pace. Has a long steep uphill near the beginning, a few steep up and down hill sections afterword with a few rock scrambling sections, and some plank covered paths through the marsh's. Has a nice view out at Jimeny Peak, but other than that, nothing else to tremendous. We went when the raspberries were ripening, so we had some nice fresh fruit along the path. Other than that, not a wasted afternoon, but a lot of effort with only a little pay-off.

Came up Saddle Ball via the Jones Nose trail. Difficult in parts due to it being steep and rocky. About 3/4 mi in to the left off Jones Nose is a nice scenic vista with great views that overlooks Jiminy Peak. On a clear day the views are spectacular. The summit however, is quite anticlimatic. Coming over on the Jones Nose Trail to connect to the AT, you don't even realize when you hit the top.
