6/7. Solo hike. Beautiful day. First part of trail is a nice walk in the woods. First stream crossing required shoes off and a wade. No obvious dry way across. Path crossed the stream a number of times, all others can be crossed dry. Trail does steepen but its a smooth trail, much like walking up a steep ramp. It does get rocky and steep again prior to the last ascent to the top. This is easier as it's a lot of switchbacks but the map makes it look straight up. Not much to see from the top. A couple of good views but not 360. Plenty of water on this trail almost all the way to the top so a bottle and filter is all you need to stay hydrated. Decided to take the Basin Rim trail down to the junction and then the Basin Trail down to Basin Lake. No water until you get halfway down the basin trail so have water with you if you go this way. You also need to take shoes off when you cross Basin Brook. Water felt good on the old tired feet. It's not a bad walk from Basin Pond back to the Brickett Place where I parked. All in all a great hike. Didn't see a soul.....

Brickett House to West Royce Summit. Difficult it is but the scenery is gorgeous. There are multiple waterfalls and a pseudo canyon of the mad river that needs to be crossed 3 times. Wet feet are a distinct possibility. Definitely need great hiking footwear and poles would be advised as it is a rainforest and every rock on the trail is wet and has moss/algae. Loved all of it and I will do it again soon.

Well, have done the East Royce portion of this trail from Rt.113 at the top of Evans Notch - a few times - and it's a great hike: short enough for young kids, waterfall, stream, lots of forest changes, open summit with good views. And! It's quiet....
