This nature trail is approximately 1 mile-long and travels through a variety of habitats including bottomland hardwood forest and cypress swamp. This trail provides access onto the wildlife pier that extends over Black Bayou Lake (highly recommended). The pier is a popular location for wildlife viewing, especially for alligators and birds. (Note: Currently the middle section of the pier is closed for repairs)

This is the best trail at Black Bayou Lake NWR in my opinion. The boardwalk sections are very scenic and while the middle section of the pier is closed, both sides have very good views of the lake. The trail does flood occasionally and has a few places the the boardwalk is no longer flat because of some shifting.

The boardwalk sections through the cypress trees are beautiful. The full loop over the water was closed due to some repair work needing to be done on the piers. There is some great wildlife to be viewed at Black Bayou. This is worth the trip out. If you're here within hours of the visitor center, rent a canoe to paddle and explore a little more of the lake off the nature trail.
