The Big Creek Trail winds through 7 miles of stands of mature mixed pine hardwoods and passes many scenic points of interest including several waterfalls. Hikers should be aware this trail is rugged and best suited for the physically fit. (Note: You mush have a Wild Louisiana Stamp to legally access this WMAs or other LDWF-administered lands if you do not have a Louisiana fishing or hunting license (Can be bought online for as little as $2)).

Some areas have clusters of trees with blazes, but other areas have no or faded blazes. This means that when you run into an area with a lot of blazes, you might end up hiking in a circle, following the clustered blazes, especially if the blaze for the next segment is missing. Be sure to check your map frequently! And bring trekking poles! The hills can be quite steep! Also, this trail is likely longer than 6.9 miles. I’m thinking it could be closer to 8.5 but since I had to backtrack a bit I can’t say for sure. Be prepared for the many stream crossings.

I didn't get to finish this one yet. I went alone during hunting season & ran into a hunter who said I needed to get out of the woods during hunting season. I was wearing safety orange & know how to take care of myself in the woods, but he creeped me out, so I left while I still could. I hike solo all the time & have never had this happen before. I do plan to return & finish this trail. But, I'll bring someone with me just to be sure I don't have a problem with anyone. Also, same problem with trash on this trail.

S/o to Take-a-hike ( for having a recording of this trail and descriptions. It made it possible for me to actually get this trail on this site. I'll be honest here, I just wasn't a fan of this trail. It was a long, hard-to-follow bushwack and the trail markers didn't always follow the paths/game trails in the woods (after a few miles, I figured out that the marker for people going the opposite direction normally pointed toward the next maker heading your direction). There were a few places where the trail would cut and if you didn't have a sharp eye you'd walk past a turn and not know it until you realized you hadn't seen a marker in a while. This way very frustrating for me and due to the nature of the bushwack you must be aware of ticks. The redeeming factor for this trail would be that the creek is nice and the topography is unique for Louisiana; however, I found St. Mary's Falls Trail to be nicer and better than this trail in pretty much every way.
