Was nice to get out in the middle of no where however found it difficult to find trail now and then. Thankfully I have this app.

Was a beautiful trail with many attractions along the way. Captivating staircase waterfall, beautiful rock formations, and a great look at the rock castle river. This trail gave us a view of the infamous rock castle narrows as well. Will be shooting that soon! Couple long steady inclines to finish up the back section of the loop but all in all great trail. Be careful on the last leg up easy to get turned around with little markers in sections. Will be back soon. Watch for bears as scat was seen along the way. Happy trails

This was a fantastic trail! We visited in January when the temp happened to dip into the 40’s. The atmosphere was wonderful and there was plenty of great views. I tend to like more secluded and less travelled areas. This trail really surprised me and was not remotely “creepy” like others said in their reviews. Not very difficult. The road is blocked off so you just need to walk for a few minutes to get to the trailhead. The scenery around the river was awesome! The rock castle was interesting. The water in all of the rivers looked tropical. Van Hook Falls was amazing and a welcome place to stop for lunch. There are a few other smaller waterfalls that were nice. Overall, I really enjoyed this trail.

Winding Stair is very lightly traveled, last time I was in the area, it was poorly signed as well. The entire Rockcastle Narrows/Sheltowee loop is very isolated, and does have a creepy feel to it. I hiked towards VanHook from FR 119 last october and found quite a bit of bear scat and ripped up stumps along VanHook Branch.

it is very isolated and I agree with one pf the other reviews...creepy. Its beautiful once you get down to the river but its very isolated.

We drove down a gravel road for 17 miles, only to come to a gate. The app said the trail head was a 5 minute walk from where we parked. We parked, walked up there, and got to a road with a sign that said the trail head was 1.75 miles down that road. It was also very creepy and extremely isolated.

Went downhill on 401, camped along the river and came up 402 the next day. It was hot and humid which added to the difficulty. We had large 50lb packs. These were moderate to difficult, but with the packs, solidly difficult. Great camping by the river, but please take your trash out with you. Many before have not.
