You have to park at Woody Gap and then walk north about 150 yards along the side of the road to access the trail. Exercise caution, as the road shoulders can be narrow in places. This is a very rocky service road that has seen better days, and quite steep in some areas. At the top you are rewarded with a great panoramic view. There is also an old fire tower that has been converted into an antenna farm that houses an amateur (ham) radio repeater and Camp Merrill backup phone radio system, among others. There is a fence, so you won't have access to the actual tower.

I made this climb after being overwhelmed with the number of people at preacher’s rock on a Saturday. The climb is a very, very steep gravel road, so I found it difficult. Unfortunately the tower and fence was locked, but the views very similar to preachers rock, but a little less expansive. However, it is much less trafficked which made for true peace on the top of the mountain.

Did this hike as an afterthought following a quick hike from Woody Gap to Big Cedar Mountain and back. It's a very rocky service road that has seen better days, and quite steep in some areas. At the top you are rewarded with a great panoramic view. There is also an old fire tower that has been converted into an antenna farm housing an amateur (ham) radio repeater and Camp Merrill backup phone system, among others. There is a fence, so you won't have access to the actual tower. You have to park at Woody Gap and then walk north about 150 yards along the side of the road to access the trail. Be careful!
