Rugged cliff-walk with spectacular views of multiple lakes and busy highways below. Mostly a level walk along a ridgeline going south to north. You get there by going through the West Rock Ridge State Park entrance off Wintergreen Avenue in Hamden. Follow the signs up the hill to the South Overlook about 1.2 miles. There is a large parking lot at the top of the overlook with incredible views of New Haven and Long Island Sound on a clear day. The trail is clearly marked with blue blazes. The northern terminus trailhead is located right behind the South Overlook shelter. The trail is mostly easy going but there is a two (+) mile stretch, right in the middle of this seven mile trail, that includes a lot of rock hopping ankle-breaker rocks that tends to slow you down. The rest of the trail is a really enjoyable hike with plenty of shade. At the northern terminus of trail it joins the Quinnipiac Trail (blue blazed) and the clearly marked Sanford Feeder (blue-red blazed, 0.6 mile) which connects the Regicide Trail with Brooks Road in Bethany. There is road-side parking on Brooks Road at the end of the Sanford Feeder.

DO NOT HIKE THIS TRAIL ALONE!!!Tried to go hiking today and 2 miles into the trail some creepy guy was following me and masturbating! I was terrified and ran and ran until I found a couple on trail! He was lurking around the trail near the baseball field.

Walked on a Saturday at 11am sunny and 70 degree weather. The parking lot was completely empty and we saw maybe three people on the trail. It was so nice and quiet! The end bit is quiet rocky but my dog managed. Really nice view of new haven.

Very extensive trail with lots of twist turns and intersections. Have the app open to make sure you are on your intended path is important. I didn’t see a couple connections and had to make my way through wooded area but they weren’t grown up too much just not carved out.

Spring In Connecticut is an opportune time to go hiking. Sunny days and beautiful views make this 5 1/2 mile loop very enjoyable.

Pretty, good ridge to climb rocks, dog had a lot of fun, and some good views of the new haven area

This was a combination of a walk in a park, a walk through someone’s back yard woods and a ridge hike. Not lightly trafficked. Still was okay for New Haven. Heard road traffic for most of the hike/walk. The west part of the loop had a few fun scrambles.

Great afternoon hike. Not terribly difficult, but the initial descent is pretty steep and rocky and has a fair amount of human trash. Be ready for lots of rocks, but the views and flowers and lack of people on the trail are worth it. There are places where the markers aren't great (especially when changing blazes) but overall a well-marked hike.

Great afternoon hike! Took us about 2.5 hours at a good clip with a few pauses to take in the view. Pretty wildflowers. Will be back to explore more!

Some great views along the ridge! Trail is well marked. Go early and avoid weekends to get away from the crowds.

Just came back from hiking the regicide trail, my favorite in New Haven. Started at the Westville feeder trail. A great workout if done complete and back to where you started, about 14.2 miles according to my gps, 5hrs 45 min, with some short breaks thrown in. Saw a summer camp outing at Judges Cave. Looked like 10 to 12 year olds They hiked up there, impressed, the future hikers of tomorrow. Other than them, saw no one else the entire length

Did a portion of this (the red blaze mostly), to see the views from the ridge, which were quite long-range and saw a little bit of Lake Wintergreen. A very nice hike.
