3,130-ft above Ouray, the Alpine Mine Overlook features 180-degree views of the Ouray area and the cliffs and mountains rising to the east. Hayden Mountain and the peaks looming above the Million Dollar Highway dominate the scene to the south and southeast.

Note that the map here is for the Alpine Mine branch, not Weehawken Creek/Mine. I recommend Kelvin Kent's Ouray Hiking Guide for a detailed description of this trail. That said, I wonder if the trail has been cleared since the book's publication because I went on and on beyond the creeks until I finally decided to turn around. This branch is perhaps a little bit easier elevation-wise than Alpine Mine, but much longer and not as many sweeping vistas. I did slide a few times on the loose ground, so trekking poles may be of use.

9/22/19 - Weehawken Creek Trail Beautiful sunny day with cool fall temps. Began at 10:45AM and it took me an hour to get up the steep switchbacks to the first fork toward Alpine Mine. Footing was easy and I saw fox and pheasant along the way. I took the left fork toward Weehawken Creek. This where it got a bit treacherous. The incline was not as demanding as the switchbacks but the trail narrowed a bit and was slippery in some parts; gravel-like pebbles and steep drop offs. Recommended only for sure-footed hikers. There were about 6 water crossings; some small and some large marked with cairns. All were pretty dry except a couple of trickles and I never got my boots wet. After 30 min I can upon a second fork toward the Weehawken Mine, but I stayed to the right toward the creek. Another 30 min after that fork and 2 more trickling water crossings I arrived at the creek. It looks like the trail continues on but I was content with scrambling down to the creek, having a bite of lunch, soaking my feet in the icy water and watching my pup splash around in the shallow pools. I picked up a branch/walking stick on the return hike to use through the slippery parts and left it at the trailhead for the next person. Finished the hike around 2:15PM

Super fun trail, only recorded until halfway. Uphill most of the way but very rewarding at the top and way down. Amazing views the whole way!

As the other reviewers noted, the trail is much more exhausting than the “moderate” designation implies. Steep up, then steep down. Views were beautiful!

This was a hard hike and it close to 6 miles round trip. It is steep in spots but worth the trip up. That was the smallest mine site that I ever seen but the views at the top are awesome.

Hike up was nice, definitely steep. The paths are pretty narrow and parts are loose rocks so it can get slippery. Be sure to take your time coming back. View at top is beautiful of mountains and a great view overlooking Oruay. Would do again!

Absolutely worth the uphill trek! Seriously stunning views and well maintained trail. I saw only about 10 people which was surprising for it being Saturday, July 6th. Definitely head up in the morning! Yes there is shade but temps can get you. Also like the other reviews stated, the distance is off. I clocked 2.8 miles nonstop one way. So that’s a total of 5.6 round trip just letting people know that we’re intending on a shorter trip. Bring water and grippy shoes. What goes up must come down but the reward is worth it.

The GPX for this trail is incomplete. Expect another mile or so. The trail is easy enough to follow and worth going all the way to the Alpine Mine Overlook. I would rate the trail as more difficult than moderate, but nothing technical - it's just kind of exhausting and steep enough. The worst part is the never ending switchbacks and the fatigue. I took a few breaks, and took it slow and made it up to the overlook in about 2 hours. Take the fork right when you get to it which has a sign for Alpine Mine and Overlook on it. The view at the top is worth the effort and there is a nice space to sit, rest and enjoy the view. For parking, it looked like you could grab an ATV or truck ride to the trailhead, or you can go up the unpaved road a ways and find some parking spaces on your right about a mile down from the trailhead. I had a small Honda and the road started to get a bit rough for my tires after that point.

This is a pretty tough hike for being rated moderate. It is steep uphill the whole way, on a very narrow trail, but the view at the alpine lookout is well worth it! You can see an almost aerial view of all of Ouray. There’s lots of shade along the way and it’s actually quite cold at the top so bring a light jacket. It seemed quite a bit longer than the signs say; it’s a good workout. We also encountered quite a few on deer which was pretty cool.

Tough elevation gains but awesome views, mixed shade and sun.

Patches of knee deep now requiring snow shoes and muddy in between. Views were amazing and worth it. Will hike again and see if I can give it more stars next time.

Proposed to my now fiancée at the top of the trail, so in my opinion it’s the best trail out there.

I did the Alpine Mine. Be prepared for the long, steady incline up, but you have views the entire way. Super cool to see the leftover mining equipment near the overlook. Bring a lunch and enjoy the vistas.

A pretty hike. Lots of switchbacks, uphill all the way, somewhat challenging. Most of the hike is along a forest trail, with occasional views as you climb higher. Some wildflowers, but not an abundance. Trail was lightly traveled our day - we only saw about 6 other people. I'd recommend this one as a tune-up hike for some of the more challenging trails in the region, like Ice Lake. In agreement with previous posts, I suspect the distances are longer than described.

Grass was a little overgrown so pants are definitely recommended, even in the summer months. We ended up taking a detour to the Alpine View and it was gorgeous!

Overall satisfied with this trail. The trail itself wasn't rocky, mostly pretty smooth with a steady incline. Great views the entire hike. Round trip took us about 4.5 hrs, we really took our time getting to the summit. Also stopped twice for snacks. If your in somewhat decent shape you can handle this trail.

Awesome hike! Great views. We took the Weehawkin Trail just beyond the end onto the unmaintained trail. We sat and had lunch on the trail and stared at a beautiful mountain in front of us. It was so close! It was awesome! We back tracked to Alpine Mine Trail and ended at Alpine Lookout. Breathtaking!! Amazing views! This was a full day of hiking since both trails together were 11 miles so about seven hours of hiking. But well worth it!

trail was in good shape today with several areas of snow. ended at the alpine outlook for spectacular view!
