Once your up in the mountains it's a great trip. You get to see the CDT and the San Juan Wilderness and the Weiminuche Wilderness to the West. It's what you think about when you say the word Colorado Goes through Mtn meadows then through Ponderosa pine to bring you out on top above timberline. The first 4 miles are up. You'll gain 2000 feet in elevation pretty quick. Once on top you have to worry about your footing in certain places but as long as your careful it shouldn't be a concern.

This is the first trail I have hiked near Pagosa Springs where I haven’t run into any other hikers. It was a great hike but it does appear that the Forrest service is letting nature reclaim the trail. The first two miles were easy enough as the trail was pretty clear. After that there were a lot of blow down trees. We stopped at the three mile mark due to an avalanche zone that left quite a lot of timber strewn about. At about 9800’ I was surprised to see snow at the base of the slide zone.

The views were lovely but the trail was horrible. It has not been cleared for a long time.
