Directions from Highway 69: Less than 6 miles south of Westcliffe on Highway 69 turn right onto County Road 119 and continue due south for miles on the paved road for 5-6 miles. At the junction, turn left on the gravel road and continue following County Road 119 south for about five miles. Shortly after entering the National Forest is the southern trailhead for The Rainbow Trail and the beginning of the 1 1/2 mile four-wheel drive portion of the road. The trailhead is at the end of the road.

Myself and Friend hiked this in August and the weather was amazing. The Music Pass trail is not easy by any stretch, the inital up hill is challeneging to the highest point of this Music Pass Trail. the view are amazing though and well worth it. If your continuing on to either the Lower or Upper Sand Creek then it is a pretty easy down hill trek to the junction leading to either lake. Overall, pretty hard but worth it when reaching the top!

Absolutely the most beautiful trail I've ever had the pleasure of hiking up. The pass itself is breathtaking and you can spend forever there next to the surveyors pole. The trail is moderately trafficked, we passed few people. BRING BUG SPRAY! Also, its important to note that this trail is only moderate if you have a high clearance vehicle 4x4. There is a roughly 3 mile steep hike up to the trailhead if you don't have that, and the total hike ended up being around 7.5 miles. Not for a beginner. The views and experience are worth it but definitley warm up to this one if you can't drive to the second parking lot and trailhead.

Amazing and lovely trail. Make sure to use lots of bug spray, we were getting bit all the way up and down. The base trail head is where we parked but I would highly recommend getting a good lifted vehicle to get to the second trail head. We calculated about 10 miles round trip from the first TH to the peak and about 1300 ft elevation. But the second trail head to the peak was only about 2.5 miles round trip and about 500 ft elevation. Still great views

Gorgeous hike up to the pass 2 days ago. A few small streams to cross ,but the view was spectacular once arriving , took about hour and half from top parking lot, a good climb but so worth it. Minimal traffic for July 4. Will go back to see the lakes.

Beautiful views, definitely returning to see the Sand Lakes. Also, I made it to the trailhead in a manual 2003 Subaru Forester with AT tires and skid plates. I didn’t touch my skids once on anything and there was snow and ice on the steeper hills. Disregard all the high clearance 4wd only comments. Just need a good driver.

Backpacked here on 9/1/18. We drove our ‘13 Subaru Forester just past the grape creek(?) TH. We tried to make it further up the road, but it was too rough. High clearance is needed if you want to drive to the trailhead for music pass. After parking, we put on our packs. I believe we hiked over 2 miles up the road before reaching the upper parking lot/TH. It is steep, and quite difficult with a heavy pack on. Many four wheelers and trucks went by us on the road. Not very pleasant to be left in the dust from all the vehicles. That being said, we were very happy once we got to the actual trail. It is beautifully forested before opening up on the pass. Gorgeous 360 views near the sign for Music pass. We found a dispersed site with an incredible view. With our packs off, we went down the trail towards the lakes. It was about 5 pm now and were unsure about weather so we turned around. Would love to head back here next summer to see the lakes. Love the Sangre de Cristo range!!

Great hike. Parked at the second parking lot....I wouldnt drive to that point but a friend did and it was kinda like a roller coaster ride. However you can walk up from the first lot like previous people have mentioned. THIS IS A MUST DO HIKE.

So, the trail head on this one is misleading as there are 2. We parked at the LOWER TH and this will add 2 miles each way to your hike. The lower trail/road is not marked very well, we only saw 1 arrow pointing the way. The upper TH is apparently 2 miles or so up the road, we never got that far. The road is a 4X4 trail and looked a bit rough. We saw a newer Ford Explorer go up but I would not venture up this one in my truck. We came across a very nice guy in a jeep (at our turn around point) who said we were half way to the upper TH, even though we were 2.5 in?? We did decide to return to the car as we had some time constraints. This was a beautiful hike none the less. We are hoping to head back up on 4 wheelers and find the upper TH and the true trail. The elevation gain and distance listed are most likely from the upper TH and not the lower one. The climb up the first leg has steep areas and will make the heart pump but is not bad. There is a restroom at the lower TH and is clean for the most part.

Absolutely beautiful views at the top of the pass. Unfortunately unable to make it to the lakes as the spring run off made the creek crossing impassable. Still quite a bit of snow on the trail as well. Made it a bit more difficult but worth it in the end. We went June 7th. Definitely going back later in the summer. Another tip - you need high clearance 4wd to get to the trail head. There is a lower parking area if you don't have 4wd but adds to the hike time. And no Mountain bikes are allowed. Not sure why.

I've hiked this trail to Upper Sand Creek lake probably close to 30 times in the past 17 years. Its my favorite get-away trail with a nice reward at the lake with good sized trout. Expect the hike to take about 30-40 minutes up to Music Pass with an unbelievable view, then another 30 minutes down to the creek crossing and about another 45 minutes up with switchbacks to Upper Sand Creek Lake. Its totally worth it. Great for pack camping to fully experience the area more, with a number of good campsites. Lake elevation is 11,700 ft, so lake doesn't ice-out until late June.
