Birdseye Gulch is a good trail to take it up a notch. There are a few obstacles and bigger tires/small lift may be required. The trail is a cooler way to get to Mosquito Pass since it ends near the beginning of Mosquito and is much harder than that section of Mosquito.

This trail is definitely rocky & I wouldn’t recommend stock vehicles due to high clearance needed for some rock outcroppings.

We took this trail on an absolutely beautiful day that had just a little bit of rain before we hit the trail. First off this trail is not one to take your stock poorly equipped vehicle on. I was in a 2008 Jeep JKU with a locker in the rear and 35" tires along with slider/step bars installed. There are several stream crossings but nothing that is too deep at all. There are a lot of rocks on this trail and not small ones but not huge ones either, just take your time and pick the right line and you will be fine. By the way there are a set of train tracks that run through the trail and when a train comes across there you might freak out a bit like the 4 of us did. We took the trail to the end and then up to the top of the peak and back down into Leadville, fantastic trip took about 3 hours in total.

I loved Birdseye. Just technical enough to have fun but I knew I'd make it without breaking anything. It will connect to Mosquito so the views are fantastic and obviously old mining stuff everywhere. Definitely one to check out if you're in the area, have fun out there! If you want to check it out I have a video of the run up at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nwd0UDmdeYU 2nd gen Xterra, 33" tires, 2" lift, no sway bars.
