Butano State Park has an impressive range of ecosystems -- coast redwood, coastal scrub, evergreen forest -- and this 14-mile hike goes through all of them. It starts out in the valley at the park's entrance, then climbs to a series of ridges that ring a deep canyon running along the center of the park. Highlight of this hike is the Ray Linder Memorial Trail, which passes through a serene grove of redwoods on the far northeast edge of the park. It then returns along a ridge line, descends for awhile back into a redwood forest, returns to the ridge once more, then finally takes one steep, zigzagging descent to the starting point. You can slice about three miles off this hike by skipping the Butano Creek Trail Loop, but you'll miss one of the prettiest sections of the park. This is a great all-season park: it's not far from the Pacific Ocean so it doesn't get terribly hot in the summer; that also means it can be colder than expected the rest of the year. Springtime wildflower season is also a great time to come.

Long hike with quite the variety of terrain. Started counter clockwise up the Ano Nuevo trail to get that steep climb out of the way. The Olna Fire Road is sharp gravel with lots of ups and downs. Beautiful views though. After doing the Ray Linder memorial trail I continued on Butano Fire road. Visited the abandoned airstrip where I ate some lunch. Backtracked to the canyon trail which I’m sure is much prettier in the springtime. Lots of evidence that there would be many rushing streams.....all dry by now at the end of June. A good hike probably don’t need to do it again though.

Actually, all of tails in Butano State Park are amazing. Jackson Flats trail is like its name “flat”. Plentiful rainfall in this Spring growths colorful mushrooms.

This was a moderate hike. Dogs are not allowed on any "trail" in the Butano. They are only allowed on paved roads, in campsites, and on fire roads. The hike it self was decent. Not too hard fro someone in shape. My sister, who is heavier with knee and ankle issues managed to hike part way on this trail until we took a wrong turn. Markers aren't too clear but we still managed. My 5 y/o also was able to do part of this trail well.

This was an excellent trail. I backpacked in to the trail campsite, a couple had wasps, but the one I stayed in (camps 7/8) were wasp free.
