Fire road, easy hike/bike, nice views. The hike to Henninger Flats is on a fire road with no shade. Therefore, hike very early during the summer. There are nice views of LA if you happen to hike after a rain storm or a windy day. Scenery is nice when you reach the Flat. There is a Nature center, a picnic area and public campground set amid trees. Visitors can start at the gate on Pinecrest Drive. Although the trail looks closed with a gate, there is an opening for hikers/mountain bikers to enter. There is limited parking at the trailhead. Please be respectful of the neighbors.

Nice walking trail, no shade. I advise dont hike in summer. Heatstroke and no shade. But overall very cool to walk to the top! Campground and surprise at the top!

Good wide fire road for a straight up workout with expansive views, but there’s no shade or connection with nature.

About an hour hike up, 15 minute run down. Not much shade - started the hike about 2hr after sunrise. Pretty uneventful hike, just walking up a dirt fire road. Great views of the LA basin. Cute little campground at the top with plenty of tree coverage.

crowded, easy incline. The views are the only thing that makes it worth doing.

The trail doesn't have much shades. The view is pretty the same all the way up to the top. Once you get to the top, take time to explore different trails, it was quiet peaceful up there.

Good beginner backpacking hike even with kids. Nice day hike as well. No shade and pretty much uphill all the way through so go either early morning or later in the afternoon. nice views. Some benches to stop and enjoy the view or rest.

Great training hike for uphill conditioning! It’s never overly steep, but the incline is fairly consistent throughout. The trail is very wide and even, terrific for trail running as well. Absolutely no shade for the entire hike, definitely start early on warmer days. There are restrooms and a water fountain at the Flats (although occasionally no running water, so make sure you bring enough with you), and beautiful views from both upper and lower campgrounds. If you have time, check out the cute little visitor center and enjoy a snack at one of the picnic tables. This is one of the nicest local campgrounds I’ve been to, and it’s always serene even when it’s slightly busier on the weekends. If you’re doing this hike on a weekend, I’d recommend parking and starting at Pinecrest to avoid the crowds, but during the week it’s nice to start at Eaton Canyon, adds variety and a couple additional miles. The Walnut Canyon “shortcut” is also fun, but was closed this past weekend due to the recent rains.

It was a great hike. We actually started from where Altadena Dirve meets Midwick Dr and Roosevelt Ave. There is small parking space there. After asking a few people, we managed to go down and crossed Altadena Creek and joined the path which eventually meets Mount Wilson Road. From there it is all incline up to the Herringer Flats Campground. Uninterrupted 180 degree view (except a few power line towers) of Pasadena and Altadena which "follows" you all the way up was breathtaking. For us who hike often, it took 2.5 hours to do out and back to/from the Campground. Saw a baby rattlesnake. There are rest rooms in the campground but they were pretty unsanitary. Over all, we liked this hike!

Great trip...steep incline like everyone mentioned. Lots of benches to take a break. (4) Beautiful campground and the views as the sunset were nothing short of spectacular. Treated water is available now at campsite. Free stove cooking fire wood from rangers there on site usually but no campfires...temp overnight where in high 40s low 50s if your interested in backpacking and camping with a group w have a Meetup group on the Meetup App. Check out Camping & Hyking Addict http://meetu.ps/c/4n2N4/KxFvT/d on Meetup

Crisp December day, perfect (b/c there is no shade and insane to do this hike most other months outside Winter).

This trail has no shade, anticipate a steep incline. You must pass four benches before getting to your destination. But must agree it has great views ! It is a good workout!

3.5 stars for the actual/physical hike - although it's a good workout up, it's really just on an unshaded fire road (start early or late afternoon!!), so not a very exciting trail experience. But 5+ stars for the vistas on the way up! Every bend and turn offers an awesome view across the LA basin and, on a clear day, all the way to the ocean. Went for a sunset hike (3:40 pm departure) and took me slightly over an hour to get to the top (4:50pm), just in time for the sun to sink below the horizon. This meant it was light for some of the way down, but I definitely needed my headlamp for the last 1.5 miles to my car (I parked on Pinecrest Dr.) as it was pitch dark. I think during a full moon this would be a really fun hike, as it'd be pretty bright for most of your descent after sunset! The views from the campground at Henninger Flats are really breathtaking and well worth the trek up - going to definitely backpack and camp up here sometime soon!

Solid elevation gain, with the views of LA getting better as you go. The view from the Flats is amazing. Would definitely be fun to do a quick overnight camp at the Flats campground.

Henninger Flats is a magical place. Anyone giving this hike less than 5 stars has seriously sprained their brain on the trail. Sorry to say. If you’re quick, it’ll take an hour to the top and you can sling a hammock between two trees overlooking all of Los Angeles. Stay for the sunset when the light of day goes away and the city’s lights come on. It’s unbelievable looking down on the massive urban hellscape you’ve managed to escape for however long you’re up there. This place is absolutely magical and if I lived closer to Pasadena, I’d go up there on a weekly basis.

Main thing to note is the lack of shade. I didn’t find it particularly hard but make sure you’re sunscreened up and have proper water/snacks. If you go early or late it may help temperature. Other than that seems like I’d recommend starting around 5:30-6pm to catch the sunset up top. Beautiful views. Easily just became one of my favorite places. That being said there isn’t a TON of diversity to the hike - which is why I’m giving it 4 stars.

Nice evening hike--many great lookouts for sunset and nighttime city views. As an evening hike, the heat wasn't too bad, and because the trail is wide and smooth, it's very manageable for the way back down in the dark. I would bet all that openness would make it fairly brutal on a hot sunny day though.
