Up the South ridge at sunrise is amazing. It was September 1st so not a lot of worn path to follow and it was my first time on the mountain. The bouldering became a little more than I had anticipated. Not technically difficult going up but I didn’t feel confident I’d find the same route on my way down and alternates could easily be a game ender. I chose to hike out to Wildcat canyon which was a sawtooth elevation nightmare that required way more water than I had. I’d like to find a loop that goes up the South ridge and circles back to the East. We’ll see. Always bring more water.

i don't feel good well, only short hour. So will do again someday soon.

This was my third time up this “trail” and I personally love the challenge of the southern ascent to El Cajon mountain. This isn’t really a hike, but more of a bouldering, route finding test that’s mentally and physically strenuous. There’s lots of opportunities to go the wrong way, or get over your head with bouldering so my advice would be to: 1. Stick to the center of the ridge. 2. Bring a friend the first time out. 3. Plan to walk out the main trail. Much easier. 4. Go left at the tree. :-) 5. If you can’t get over the ledge rock that’s 3/4 of the way up. Look for the alternate path 20 feet in the southern direction.
